DVD to Video iPod converter

hmmmm..... for 30 bux its a pretty good deal.

the problem is that the US has pretty tough copyright laws so i don't know how legal it'd be..

i believe as long as you OWN a copy of the dvd you should be O.K.

software for video converting is usually hit and miss.

it seems like the website has a trial version so you should download it and give that try FIRST before you drop your cash on it.

best regards

:thumbdn: :thumbdn: for HandBrake. I tried it and I found the user interface a PIA to use. Nothing is done automatically.

True enough, it was designed to give you a lot of options for quality size and file type, definitely could be a pain if you were doing a lot of ripping. The new build has an improved user interface with presets for the iPod, Apple TV, and PS3 (at least the Mac build does).

I was using the new build! That's what through me. It's supposed to make things easier but in fact makes it harder to sort through all of the options. PQDVD and the Mp4Converter are your best bets.

Methinks AutoGK will do this for free. I use it all the time to convert DVDs and movies for my PDA.

I highly recommend PQ-DVD. It is well wortht the $40 I spent for it.

Thanks for the tip, Ken. Sadly, the PQ-DVD folks don't support Mac users. I probably should have mentioned up front that I run a G5.

I use Handbrake on my MacBook Pro and it seems just fine. I also use fastdvdcopy4 which works well also.

Thanks, Dark. The forty-two webpage states that my OS must have the "BSD layer installed". Is that something I need to be concerned with? I've done zero tinkering with my OS other than the regular updates.

The times I've used handbrake (for my own DVD's, of course :D) it hasn't been necessary to use forty-two. If you hit a disc that it won't work on, then its probably worth trying.
For the best quality (if its a concern) use 2-pass encoding.

i use an apollo dvd to ipod converter. they make several different programs.

works great. takes about as long as the movie is to convert.

Macintosh + Video? Yeah no problem!!

first import the DVD to your hard drive you have to break the CSS encryption. if you're on a mac you can use Mactheripper.
MactheRipper: http://mirror.thunderclapunlimited.com/mactheripper_266.dmg.zip
that's freeware. it will dump the VIDEO_TS folder to wherever you want.
then you can transcode the video for use with the video ipod with either Handbrake aka Mediafork (freeware again) or roxio popcorn. for breaking css encryption on windows i think you can use CloneDVD.
Handbrake/Mediafork: http://mirrors.m0k.org/handbrake/testing/HandBrake-0.8.5b1-MacOS_UB_GUI.dmg
Roxio Popcorn 2: http://dl0.sonicjapan.co.jp/dl/Popcorn2/Popcorn_201_Updater.zip
(this 'updater' for popcorn 2 will install the full version.)

Handbrake can export to AVI/MP4/OGM with H264, XviD, or DivX codec. Popcorn can export to video Mp4, Sony PSP, DivX, H264, iPod, or 3G Phone... Good luck and have lots of 'legal' fun with your new video toy.

Popcorn requires less user interaction. I'd rather have a powerful tool rather than a streamlined consumer level solution. Handbrake provides a high level of control. There are few other alternatives. Forty Two requires extensive additional installs without a guarantee of a working tool when it's all said and done. Compared to commercial compression tools such as the now defunct Cleaner or Compressor, Handbrake is a joy to use. You can specify all settings easily if you understand what kind of file you need (for iPod, .mp4), KB to MB (1000 to 1), and bit rate (kb/second). For example if you want your DivX rip to fit on (1) CD-ROM, just set target size (MB) to 699MB. Handbrake will do all the math and your end result will be perfect. After I learned to use it, I didn't go back.

PQDVD is Windows only and it's commerical software (not freeware) so it's not useful for Bronco.

Ash, is this for PC only?

SlySoft's products are Windows Only also.

Here are pages of FreeWare from Softpedia.com ranked by number of downloads(/popularity) from their Encoders/Converter/DIVX Related section -

Encoders/Converter/DIVX Related FreeWare

These are not all DVD to MP4 converters (and not all in the list are free) - but there are quite a few in that list - and some are Free and reasonably "popular" near the top of the list.....
There is also a rating system and some reviews - also some software are also chosen as "Picks".

on page 5 when I looked is -

Free iPod Video Converter 1.34

Hope that helps.

These programs only run on a PC but through this company you can copy dvd's, convert video to mp4, and copy program Cd's. These programs crack the encryptions so you can make backup copies.
