DVR, media server, recorder, etc? What's good these days?

I want to record some cable TV programming while I'm at work. Ideally I'd like something that takes HDMI in and sends HDMI out that can hook up to my computer.

I'm getting lost in all the ads. What really works well? What is a waste of time and money? TIA!
 
Its impossible to watch TV without first recording it in order to manage commercial content. I would suggest a DVR or PVR from your cable provider, or if that isn't possible then a DVD recorder that can write onto RAM DVDs although the output will only be 480p
