Dye leather before soaking and baking?

I want to make a sheath like the picture is showing in this link. This will be my first try and I need to know how I make that kind of dyeing with that combination of different colours. And is it adviceable to do it before or after soaking and baking?
 
Can't help ya with the dyeing and achieving the different colors. However, when I was doing dyeing I did that after the baking process.
