The dye is called Saddle brown.

Your sheath looks excellent! The distressed leather has a good wicking ability and takes a mink oil really nice if you set it in the window on a sunny day or something like that, SnoSeal also works great. While I haven’t done a buck sheath, I’ve done others and also my wallet. They take on a nice aged look like Matt’s pic above. You can also buff them to give them a bit of a shine to add more depth.
 
Nice job there David. Interested to see how an oiled sheath turns out. Here is a 110 distressed leather sheath that I applied mink oil to. Not great, not bad.......

like it better that way, than the original coloring..if it was that light tan color originally.
