One of my pet peeves is wishy washy colour on dyed bone....we all remember Ol' Pondy from Tidioute...20230331_120400.jpg
Still as slimy green as ever. Offhand I can't remember the official name of this colour ,neither can I fathom why they made a colour on a knife which would be so easily lost if dropped into long grass or pond slime....it would literally disappear. Then I get this from Case...the true masters of anaemic bone dyeing and strange names for colours..

Hunter Green.....hmmm the only reason is that Im hunting around for a reason to make such a gleerch colour green....Why Meako Why? Why did you buy such an abomination?
It looked better on the website than in real life.
Not a problem...Ive had moderate succes in the past redyeing Case bone. This one is different. Take a look at the after shots...20230331_095535.jpg
This side took the RIT dark green quite well. The otherside however...

I dunno...it seems to have washed out more than darkened...Closer inspection of the bone reveals more of ,what I believe the technical term for is, little brown squiggly bits. Could this be some form of osteoporosis? Why does one sides bone absorb the dye and not the other? At this stage Im thinking of dyeing it blue. There are some colours that can be garish in tone...green is not one of them.

The answer is a pineapple. o_Oo_Oo_O I have had one go at re-dyeing, it was also green, a sickly lime green. Was happy with the result overall, but one side took the dye a lot better than the other. The side that took the dye came out really well, the other side, nah.

The first knife you show is fine in my eye., As it’s well done, just ugly. The case however… ugly begets ugly.

My attempt at dying bone was decently successful. And has worn in somewhat well.

I don’t care for garish covers.

It didn't turn out too bad. If you are not happy with it time to get the dark green sharpie out and start colouring(they do make them😊).
I'ld oil it to see if it makes the dye run or darken it.
Good luck

I used to like Green...then I remembered algae, mucous, verdigris, certain teeth in certain mouths...

Perhaps if you try Yellow dye on it it will deepen the green? Did you clean it efficiently with alcohol- do you have any...;) and not touch it with fingers before immersing???

Meako, I'm sure you remember Sneezey, that poor thing went from bad to worse, in the dyeing process, five or six times before becoming what it is today.

Your Case is proof that bone dyeing is more luck than skill. So keep tryin' and good luck. It can only get better... or worse. o_O
Maybe skip a few stages and go straight to black... it'll cover a multitude of unsuccessful coloring attempts. ;)
BTW mate, that pen blade still can not be opened by human strength alone. :p

Still better than it was, I think. Now it’s just green, I’m not getting radioactive pool vibes any more.

Maybe try dropping dye on with an eye dropper rather than submerging whole knife, so that side alone can have extra time to absorb dye?

Good ol Sneezy...yes I remember him well...if memory serves he was the same colour as a sickly childs snot...Looking good these days tho.

Thanks mate I will be trying the dropper method this week ....I love russlocks ...this was meant to be Hunter Green but what I received was Soggy Lettuce...the pitfalls of buying on line...No penalty.

I had a Rough Rider Canoe in Smooth White Bone that I tried to dye purple. I don't remember why I picked that color but it didn't turn out well. One side was just OK, but on the second the dye didn't really take and the result was hideous. I thought that the white would take the dye better than something that was previously dyed another color.

I think it had to do with different parts of the bone with different densities on each side. I haven't tried a dye job since.

After hiding it in the back of the drawer for a couple years, I pulled it out, took it apart and gave it new wood handles. It's now one of my favorites.

Meako I have never been brave enough to try and experiment with dyeing a Knife, I think I might have done a forced Patine with Apple Cider Vinegar hgeated up, but thats about it, so well done on what you have achieved so far!

I actually really love the mossy, algae, pickle, and toxic green knives. I LOVE that pond Tidioute!

I think my least favorite ever was this Case I got that was supposed to be yellow but it was just like a sad, pale, faded, pee-stained parchment color

So I used some Daffodil Rit Dye and really gave it some lively color!
