Have some of you done this?
And could you post a picture with the end result?
Thanks!

I've done it, don't have any pics though.

Results vary, some are great and some look pretty shoddy.

What color are you trying to go from/to?

Maybe on a Black scaled PM2 to a little darker than coyote brown

Can't be done. You're not altering the chemical composition of the whole handle, just dyeing the surface layers.

You can only go from a lighter color to a darker color.

I remember reading something like you can't go from dark to light. It has to be from light to dark. I have never tried it so I could be wrong.

Dye works by leaving tiny particles of pigment in the spaces of a material. Dyeing something will never cover up the material's inherent color, only alter it. Going from black to a lighter color will only SORT OF work. If you're going to something like a brown you'll see a brown tinge to it in some lights and at some angles, but it will still be black. If you have white G10 you're pretty much open to any color.

About the only thing you could do if you wanted to go from black to another color without replacing the scales complete would be to paint and seal them. Not an ideal solution.

Had to try this today from necessity. My Boker Nano is one that came with those horrible bright green scales. I bought it like two months before they started offering other colors.

In short, it was simple. I diluted some brown leather dye in an old tiny sauce pan, just enough to cover the scale. Put it on the stove, medium heat, and let it go until was almost boiling. Done. Looks great, and it gave a sheen that want there before. I acid and stone washed the blade too.
