Dying Handles

Anyone have any experience (pics!) with dying the micarta on Busse handles? I like the black canvas but it could be blacker. I got this idea when working with my HR in the rain: the water darkens the scales and I really like the darker look. This could be a real possibility for some cool mods. Any ideas?

You don't need to dye them just oil them. Oil will darken them, use will do the same thing

I hope that helps

:D:D

Cliff Stamp has a great thread here somewhere about Micarta handles. You can't dye them and oil will wear off eventually. Shotter's gonna try DuraCoting an RD6 I own and I wonder how the handles will take that paint. P.S. DON'T use Sharpie Perm Marker on 'em though...I can confirm that such coloring method looks and smells bad.

I'll look around for the thread I mentioned...back in a minute hopefully with a linkola. :)

handle them for hours at a time, and they darken from your hands. My AK came with handles that looked gray, but by the end of the day they were pretty dark.

Hay Eric what kind of oil? Motor Oil, Veggie Oil.
I prefer mineral oil, which is baby oil without the powder fresh scent. You can find it at drug stores, where it is sold as a laxative. It is also good for blades. All my carbon steel and INFI gets a mineral oil sponge bath before being put away.

I spilled some leather dye on one of my handles, and it wont come out! Scrubbing, soaking, alcohol, havent tried bleach yet though. :o

So I guess its a possibility that canvass micarta can my dyed. The fibers soak up stuff that is thin enough.

But "USE" washes off....
Ever since I stripped my HH, I've noticed the more I use it, the darker the slabs (black canvas) get. I wash it vigorously with dish soap after each use, and it doesn't lighten at all. On the other hand, my ST Ripper slabs only get a little darker while wet, and rapidly shed water. I wonder if it has to do to the amount of phenolic being higher than the amount of linen/canvas?

Don't wash it! LOL

My carry SHBA's are pretty much black and stay that way even though I know there is a pattern under there somewhere.

I clean them, they are black again within a day or so.

Have you tried sandblasting?
Good idea, but this particular blade I dont want to get anywhere near an abrasive shooter. :(
