Dying leather?

I picked up a box of heavyweight leather scraps off of Ebay to try my hand at making some sheaths.

I was wondering if anyone uses anything other than commercial dye, something readily available, to give a nice brown color.

I don't have any dye laying around and I don't think there would be anyplace local to get any. I could order it online, but then I have to wait again.

I know there must be somthing, I mean, we didn't always have dye right?

Kiwi shoe cream! :)

If you mix the brown with the cordovan you get a nice reddish brown, and if it's not dark enough to suit you mix in a tiny bit of black -- but that's just if you're picky; if you're not you'll probably find the brown is fine by itself.

There are home methods some folks use , just google it enough and you'll find plenty.
I buy my dye at my nearest grocery stores (Save Mart) , they have Kiwi black and brown , I'm sure dye is plenty easy to find where you live , if you look for it (yellow pages :D )
You do not need to resort to buying it online unless you wanted to.

Holy crap! I feel like an idiot. I never even thought of the Kiwi products.
I have that right in my sock drawer.

I'm thinking I need some expensive solution or something.

Thanks guys.

No problemo :D Also , it seems to help if you gently warm the leather up first , maybe a blow dryer , or toaster (move leather back and forth over the heat).
Get yourself some bes wax to finish her up with.

I use to own a shoe repair shop. Go to one and buy a bottle of lincoln dye. If you have questions I will be glad to offer help.
