Are they worth the healthy price tag? Is it true their filters don`t clog up? Noise, weight I can deal with if they are what they claim.

I think they have been dealt with before here, and there is a current thread on candlepowerforums/cafe.

General Opinons are they are pretty good, though I've used a bagless "Thunder" for abotu 8 eyars that works on the same prinsiple and is quite powerful.

The owner of my local vacuum store (that's all they sell & service) made the following points to me when I went in to research new vacuums:
  • Dyson's do have great suction
  • Dyson's don't clog up
  • Dyson's do have greater frequency of breakage & repairs
  • Cost of owning a Dyson is higher than normal over time

Hope this helps.

Consumer reports rates 2 other manufacturers models above the Dyson. Both cost less.

I don't have the magazine in front of me but it is the current issue.

I'm a Kirby man myself...

I read the thread from DaveH`s link and most who posted seem to like them. I looked up the Riccar line mentioned over there, I`ve never heard of them before. Anyone of heard how they are?

My dad was aiming for a Dyson before reading about them in Consumer Reports. He got a higher rated model that cost a few hundred dollars less.

Current issue has two models rated ahead of the Dyson, both from Sears/Kenmore.

Kenmore (Sears) Progressive 24614 $350
Kenmore (Sears) Whispertone 23513 $300

The Dyson rated 3rd is $560

We have the Dyson DC-07 Animal, and we've been very happy with it. It seems to be robust, cleans well and is easy to empty.

Riccar is the maker our vacuum guy recommended over the Dyson (and all others). We bought one last year and it's been great. We like it very much... very well built, and it cleans quite well. Very nice warranty and service (we got a year's free tune-ups, bags, filters, etc.).

Just bought a refurbished Dyson Animal from heartlandamerica.com for $300.

Works pretty good.

Much better than the $100 bag vacuum I was using before.

Recently got the Dyson DC14 Animal, could not be happier, works wicked better than the top-of-the-line Kenmore it replaced. Pricey, but worth it just to see the amount of crud it picks up. I believe the Animal is designed specifically to handle pet hair, and I have a mutt that sheds by the bushel. The Dyson gets it all.

The one downside, beside price, is that it feels "plasticky". If you are used to an old-school vacumn it'll seem less robust. Kinda the Glock pistol of vacuum sweepers.

I do have to acknowledge not doing a whole lot of research prior to purchase on other brands, but I am really satisfied regardless.

Just as an update, I did a semi-scientific piece of research yesterday. I emptied our DC-07 completely, then vacuumed our entire house. We have a 4-bedroom, fairly large house. No kids, no pets (apart from our gerbil!). We keep it clean, neat and tidy. Carpets all round.

After the cleaning, there was enough crud in the Dyson to fill a coffee mug, maybe even a little more. For an already-clean house, I'd call that a good effort!

Got a Dyson Animal model a month ago and like it a lot. We have a longhair cat, a Norwegian Forest Cat mutt, that leaves enough generic material around to clone new cats, despite being brushed a lot. This model works for us. We'll see how it does over time. Easy to operate and a breeze to empty.
