My parents were good friends with a very old gentleman, a retired Marysville CA cop who recently died at the age of 101. He had given them each an E.C. Powell bamboo fly rod when he had to move into a retirement home.

This old fellow had lived in Marysville all his life, and apparently bought these rods right from Powell's shop in town.

I myself would never sell such a gift, but my Dad is a pretty unsentimental old guy and he's thinking he may eventually sell one or both of the rods. I was wondering if anybody knows about what the old ones go for, so he could know about how much to ask?

im big into flyrods, id love to see it. There is a website newjerseyflyfishing.com that you might want to ask this question on.

Thanks, I'll check there. I'd put up a pic for you to see it, but it's across the country from me right now, and my Dad would never even sit down at a computer!

I would advise contacting Len Codella at www.codella.com. He's an honest vintage bamboo rod dealer and will advise you as to the value. As with any rod or gun or knife, condition is everything. An E.C. Powell could be a very valuable rod.

I Googled "vintage bamboo fly rod" and got a lot of relevant hits.

Among them... http://www.wohlfordrods.com/SplitCaneLibrary/links.htm

Sounds like you need to be able to describe it pretty thoroughly.

Identifying & Evaluating Bamboo Rods

To help aid in identifying and evaluating your rod(s) be prepared to provide the following info:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Primary Info to help determine identity
Any writing and/or decal's on rod or maker's marks (i.e. stamps) on the real seat. What color is the writing and/or decals.
Any writing/decals on the rod tube, case or sack. (note: Secondary Info below would also be needed to confirm ID.)
Secondary Info to help determine identity if above is not present
Color(s) thread wrappings (used to secure guides to rod). Are there small intermediate wraps between the guides?
Does it have an Agate or Agatine guide(s) (glass like inserts, usually red, white or clear in color).
Type of reel seat. Is it an all metal construction or a combination of metal w/ plastic insert or metal w/ wood insert. Is it a threaded screw type or a sliding cap & ring. Is it uplocking or downlocking?
Length of reel seat (excluding the cork hand grip).
Length of cork, cane or wood hand grip.
To Help Evaluate Value - Primary or Secondary Info plus:
Length of rod assembled & number or sections (usually 2 or 3 pieces)
Are there any breaks or cracks in any of the rod sections?
Are the rod sections all of equal length when disassembled? If not, how much shorter are they from the longest length?
Does the rod have two tip sections?
Overall condition of the finish including finish on thread wraps. Is the finish crazed or cracked?
Condition of ferrules (metal joints used to assemble rod sections). Is the metal cracked or damaged in any way?
Condition of cork hand grip. Does it have gouges or cracks? How soiled is it. (note: cleaning a soiled grip could negatively effect rod's value)
Does the rod have a rod tube, case or sack. Are they labeled?
And lastly, consider providing a few detailed photos. Good Luck!
