I have inherited this old knife from my late father, along with a couple of others of interest. I don't seem to be able to post pics at this level of membership, so a description will have to do at this point in time:

Blade: 6 1/2", OAL: 11". "E. F. Farias" above and "Monterrey" below a logo or pictograph depicting a man brandishing a rifle above the brass bolster. "Made in Mexico" on the obverse in the same location. Appears to be good steel, sharp, but not wickedly so, significant discoloration, but only small, shallow pitting (I haven't touched this - I assume Dad cleaned it up a bit some years ago). Leather wrapped grip, aluminum butt, tang through handle, secured with semi-circular brass wedges (?) through the aluminum butt. Sheath is original - leather stitched and riveted, "Made in Mexico" embossed on the back, and an animal (boar? wolverine? - a bit worn and hard to make out) - on the front.

I'd like to know more about this knife - approximate age and value. Little or no info so far on the net - can anyone here help? If it seems worthwhile, I'll look into a paying membership and post pics of this and the others. Not a collector here, but would like to see them in the hands of someone who will appreciate them.

Thanks in advance

Bruce

OK, sorry - just read the sticky re: value of knives. So forget about the valuation question. I'm still interested about the maker, approximate age, etc - anything anyone can contribute.

Also: I notice that other "registered" users with photo inserts in their posts. How is this accomplished? When I try to insert, the only option I get asks for a URL - I've got some nice pics on my my 'puter, but for the life of me can't figure out how to let you all view them......I'm "not allowed" to post attachments"......don't think I should have to create an "album", or maybe I do? I can find no way to post to this thread other than "quick reply" so the main post/thread avenue appears closed as well. What!?

Go to photobucket or imgur.com(i think) and you can upload there. It will give you a url or img code to just copy and paste here.

Pics? Trying to learn photobucket here. Apologies if this doesn't work.

Interesting too, I would also like to know more about if anyone can provide info.

Lack of pics in the original post has likely hindered good info for this knife - you know, "seen that one ho hum". I hope I'm wrong. The nearly complete lack of info on Google could mean either that it is really rare or that Sr. Farias was/is insignificant.

I have to echo a later (now locked) post re: the prohibition of researching value. While I can understand the abuse reasoning, it's disappointing to have to risk a $30 investment to find out that your find may be worth only $10 or so. Seems like there ought to be a middle ground. Other than that big auction site (which is no help with this knife), neither can I find any other knife site where one can get a clue as to value - frustrating.

In a similar vein, I've never had so much trouble negotiating a forum. I belong to several others - woodworking, fly fishing, etc. and can post pics w/ little trouble w/o the need for photobucket or imgur, can edit w/o duplication, and follow my post w/o having to scroll through everything posted in the mean time....I'm no whiz, but I'm no slouch either......so, with apologies to those who frequent here and love the site, why is this so hard?

You just have to get used to it worrad. I came from various automotive forums and also found it very confusing and complicated at first, but after a while you get the hang of it. You probably won't be here long enough though since you're not really interested in knives.

Photo uploading is annoying every time. I use postimage.org because you don't have to sign up or anything.

While you're here, look around and do some reading, maybe try to carry a knife you already own, or do some research on a good knife that you would carry daily. You'll start learning about the convenience of having the knife on you throughout the day.

simioh,

Oh, but I do: Leatherman Wave. On my hip every day for many years now. Still don't know how I ever lived without it. The pliers are used nearly as much as the blades. Before that it was a series of pocket knives, but they always seemed to leave me eventually.....

As there are other knives from Dad to show, maybe sell, including a pre '44 John Eck, I suspect I'll be here every so often for some time yet, so I guess I'll just have to get used to the vagaries here.

Thanks for the steer to postimage. I'll check it out.

Now if I can only find out something about Sr. Farias!

Hello Bruce:

I can tell you a lot about E.F. Farias, I knew him personally, He was Born Enrique Fabían Farías in San Pedro de las Colonias Coahuila Mexico in 1882 and passed in 1970

He was a Great Hero, He manufactured the best Knives in the world, he also manufactured the best Cotton Ropes (Bull Dog Brand) and Wooden Windows (Still at work in some old buildings), he wrote great poems and was a great conversationlist (Well at least that is the opinnion of many of us, his grand kids). Unfortunately for the market value of your knife, The world Economy considered him Jack of all trades Master of none.... : )
When I was a teenager I owned one of these knives, unfortunately I lost it in one of many House movings, many of my cousins still have theirs...
I would be happy to Buy yours if you are willing to sell at a reasonable price.
if interested please email me at gfariasw@hotmail.com

Anywhere this could lead I'd like to thank you it was very pleasant to remember my grand father

Regards

Guillermo Farias

Unfortunately, the OP has not been back since this thread started in 2014. I kinda doubt he will see your reply. Stranger things have happened though. Good luck.

Thanks jstrange, anyway this post brought back nice memories, If the OP replies, that would be additional benefit. Have a great day!

Hope you manage to get one of your granddad's knives someday. I'm sure he would have enjoyed having his work appreciated by you all of these years later.
