Sometime during the past dozen years I developed an ocd regarding eagle pommel swords. A chaotic disorder of image harvesting commenced. Hundreds of examples, thousands of files. None meant for general publication without permission but rather a study tool.

Misplaced examples (sometimes purposefully), non eagle swords and even jewelry. Far from done with winnowing the wheat from the chaf, I went ahead and uploaded the mess for any to view. my acquisitions have slowed down, as I found examples I was looking for. One remains to be found but maybe down the road.

www.oldswords.com is another more organized way to browse early modern swords.

I tend to concentrate on swords from the American Revolution through the War of 1812. Most of my own eagles are on this rack

Damn Horseclover, I think you need a bandaid.....cause you're ripped!

It's about a third of the sword collection. Stuff ranging from the French & Indian war period to modern reproductions and one fantaqsy (Sleepy Hollow). The repros are dwindling somewhat. Ultimately, I'll trim down about a third and upgrade some of the eagles you see.

whoa, that is quite a collection you must have. Really nice. I want to learn more about the American Revolution era swords, especially those made in the U.S. (or Colonies). I love to make sabers.

why the eagles?

Although not unique to America, I think I began to concentrate on the eagle pommel swords as truly meant for the American market and the majority of early production coming from England. Then, the development in Philadelphia, Baltimore and along the northern east coast producing some rather unique birds. Both the castings and blade decorations, truly meant for a young nation. From many, one. A lot of the early American cutlers in Philadelphia used a lot of Solingen blades and that trend continued but the massive amount of trade with England continued right up through the early 19th century and even bootlegged during the war of 1812 with swords shipped in trunks and barrels as canes and umbrellas.

Earlier and during the war, we are also regarding a lot of English swords, supplemented with the European continental patterns. An article you may enjoy regards the Potter sabres. It is a bit of an eye, opener.

More great articles from the pages of the American Society of Arms Collectors

So, aside from the truly American made blades during the Revolution, we are looking at what had already been in country and those origins from across the pond. The big hussar vertical on that rack is a Wundes blade likely cutlered in Sweden circa 1750

Then here in context with other sabres spanning to the 20th century

Far from being blunt bludgeons, most shown above were sharp from the get go. Some of them scaringly sharp

The reeded grips and simple stirrup guards fairly easy to produce and less complex than forming the brass p guards.

Nuemann's Swords and Blades of the American Revolution a prety good flash card deck with some simple dimensions. The Lattimer collection of silver hilt swords a bit more complex but informative. Both books need editing but that true of most texts on historic swords. The Medicus collection book as well worth having for the sections of early American swords. There are many other texts. Boarder's Away, Annis& May, etc, etc
