I’ve seen credit given to Marbles for making stacked leather popular, but were they the first?

stacked birch bark predates the stacked leather. Some say to prehistoric times? That seems hard to believe. But when did someone realize to use leather washers?

Generally, Collins and Co are credited with the first stacked leather handles, starting in the 1860's or so -

Pic credit, Bernard Levine.

The stacked leather was thought to be a take off on the stacked bone and horn grips that you sometimes see in Central and South America. Why leather was chosen is anyone's guess.

Thank you. So possible civil war era but not likely, definitely not war of 1812. Fascinating. Something else to look for while watching movies and documentaries.

Definitely an interesting question..... I would think that if one went on A mission and looked at the historical data ,which kind I've no clue, to see when certain types began appearing....... My best guess is mid 1800's......
But probably earlier...... Not a big stretch from popping an antler on A rat tail \stick tang to birch bark.....
They worried more about if the steel was good enough I'd think......

👍👍👍
Cool question....

I've done stacked leather so I can take all the credit. You're welcome knife world.
