Early '90's Ultra Blade knives

I was wondering if anyone had any of the Ultra Blade series of knives that Buck offered in their early '90's catalogs. Even though they make sure that you know they aren't a Buck, they must have sold at least a few. They might be a fun sideline collection if they are to be found.

I think I have two and my son as a few... I don't know where they are... just in a box... I'll try and find them... I got them in a collection I bought... ITE ...

My brother had the fixed blade one (sitting in the center of your pic under a couple others) It was a very nice RAZOR sharp blade, unfortunately, I have no idea what happened to it when he quit hunting. :( It was a very nice knife esp. for the price at that time. I have seen them for sale at various times online. They werent made very long, so if a guy could find them, it shouldnt be too hard to finish. But there probably werent that many made, and at that price point, I think most were used.

Don't know that I've seen any of those before. Who/where were they made and what steel was used?

Let's see, 1991 and foreign made? Could they be 440A or C, maybe AUS6 or 8 if made in Japan? If China made were they using 8Cr or 3Cr steels back then?

I see two UltraBlade knives up for auction. Both folders (use key word "ultrablade").

The one with the pocket clip, wow, says INOX. German or Swiss mfg perhaps.

Funny, the other one, multi-blade, says "USA" on the blade...

Update: Solingen, Germany http://www.richartz.com/

The little lockback folder, center right in the catalog picture in the first post on this thread, is here: (http://www.maxxknives.com/products/?cat=1&sku=Ultrablade)

Sidebar: Not all UltraBlade knives were distributed by Buck. Colonial Knife Company also distributed UltraBlade cutlery during the 1980's and 1990's (note 2nd to last paragraph): http://www.colonialknifecorp.com/History/history.html

I'm guessing it was 1.4116 steel. Same thing as 4116 Krupp, INOX, etc.

I dont know much about them, such as steel type, but I do remember that Buck made the blades on some of the fixed bladed knives. I seem to remember that they came from various places so various steel types, and blade stampings, can be found.

Bump

Was just browsing the 1991 catalog and again was looking at the Ultra line. There are two "non-locking" hunters that caught my eye as they reminded me of a "sodbuster". Anyone have any Ultras?

LOL! What a coincidence.

There's one on e-Bay right now.

The seller is probably going to get a lot more than what he expected after this thread was fortuitously revived for him.

Made in Japan, by the way.

Interesting.

:D

One of my favorite haunts has several new old stock UltraBlades. The MaxiLock II and the MaxiLock III I believe. Possibly others. I keep passing them over for other items. I have looked at them closely though. They come in a plain white box and there is nothing to associate them with Buck, not even the box label. They were made in Japan. I don't think the term UltraBlade makes it a Buck. Only the provenance of who wholesaled it. The catch is I believe these knives were not exclusive to Buck and were imported and sold by others so there is no way to trace any particular knife as "Buck" related and must be collected as a standalone collection. I do happen to know the knives at this particular dealer sourced them from Buck and they are in the Buck display/sales cabinet. I may buy them someday If I hit a dry spell and in need of a fix. I would love to hear if any one knows differently as to wether these knives were exclusive to Buck. I don't think they were, but cant remember how I came to that conclusion. But if I'm wrong, I'm gonna take a road trip and snatch them up....;o)

I missed Oregon's post above confirming that UltraBlade wasn't exclusive to Buck.... too quick on the scroll.

Thanks for the reply. Guess I need to look over posts again myself because I completely missed the part in Oregon's that these were not Buck marked and were sold by other companies. I do kind of like the "sodbuster" looking model in the catalog but now that I realize/understand what they are I'm not interested in them.

Just found one I had bought on ebay years ago as a Buck but when it came it wws not a heavy Buck so I put it away..It came in a orange box on one end it says ' Made in USA' and then on the next line 'Model 241 BK Cat# 1209 .. on one side of box is a logo that looks like a sideways 8 the UltraBlade Good, affordable Knives ...The tang stamp reads UltraBlade then the next line USA t ....I considered it a good quality and to me it looks like it could have been made by Buck.I will have my son post a few pics latter today. It would be a really cool subset if Buck did in fact make it.
