Early Brown Micarta Handles

I recently viewed a Randall #3 with Brown Micarta Handle and seven spacers at the hilt. The micarta on this knife was linen micarta, not like the brown micarta seen on early Astro Knives. I have seen very few Brown Micarta Handled knives and would like to know what if any production number guesstimates are.

Suggest you send Melvin-Purvis aka Sheldon $20.00 and get his RMK, a Timeline. It will answer a mulitude of questions and makes for great reading.
It is a great reference if you intend to buy a used knife either on Ebay or at knife shows.

Thank You Rod for your Post. I edited my original post, one should not post when half asleep.

I went through my Randall Knife Collection CD. Gaddis Book, Old Catalogs, Pete Hamiltons "The Randall Chronicles". I didn't find any reference other than ones for sale in Rhett's 1991 catalog.

Dayum, it's good to see that you're still with us!

Rod, thanks for the plug my friend, sounds like the RMK timeline is working for ya! :)

Ken, as you've said, the Brown Micarta on the #3 in question is a different type than the linen type used on those early #17 'Astro's' of '61-'62...and being that we both know that the Brown Canvas was used on the #'s 14/15/16 from late '64 into '66, (we are talking about an older knife, correct?), then...

With the Brown canvas Micarta introduction in the mid-60's, it sounds like the knife you saw was either a special order, or someone at the shop was 'spearimentin' with some new material to see how it was going to work out, and as such the production numbers would be very low. (It seemed to have worked out well; black Micarta has been a shop option on most knives since '67 or so...)

As to the seven spacers, that's the easy part...it was five spacers on (most) leather handled versions at the time, and seven on non-leather versions (wood, stag, Ivory, etc...). So, as a non-leather handle, seven would have been the rule.

Did you get pics by chance? *grin*

Good to see ya again Ken, we should talk...email for the #

I still lurk, trying to learn a thing or two. I tried to hook up with you at the Eugene show but ever time we crossed paths you were deep in conversation with some of the field experts. I will shoot you an email.
