Just got an early Caper model yesterday for $18. Blade is simply marked Buck USA, with silver, maroon, silver, maroon spacers. It also has the dull finish on butt cap with the large retaining pin. It came with a full flap sheath with a 116 stamped on the back. Excellant condition, I have not seen one of these in years. Good match for my early 119. I am not sure if sheath is original as the one with my 119 does not have the model on it. Does anyone know for sure if they came marked this way?

Thanks.

I don't have a answer for your question but I was wondering if you could post a pic. I would love to see it.

I don`t have a way to take a pic, but it is a bit shorter than a Woodsman, but has a fuller handle. The blade is kind of a drop point style. I have not seen one in years before this one.

Now that's a model you don't see very often. My grandfather gave me one in the 70s, it is marked Buck, no USA or model #. Flap top sheath marked Buck, no model number.

Grateful - the blade can best be described as a larger version of the spey blade on a trapper pattern.

Here you go. I have this one and one in a double knife set, skinner and caper.

Thanks Razorback, that is a nice looking knife. Real handy in the field and around camp I bet.

FYI...in Levine's Guide to Knives & Their Values, 5th Edition, page 390, there is a picture of some early 116s. Preston

Its hard to say for sure without seeing the knife and sheath but it is safe to assume that the knife is from 1967 to about 1972. During that time we did make the holster style sheath with the model number stamped on the back. Not as easy to find and those without the model number from that time period. Sometimes you will see a shiney silver rivet holding the belt loop to the rest of the case. Usually it is stamped right on the belt loop.
Hope this helps,

There is a rivet holding the belt loop to the back of the sheath, surrounded by stitching. The 116 is stamped right below this. Thanks for everyones help so far. Finding these older knives is more fun than buying new ones!
