A very dear and lovely friend arrived from SA last week and we met up for lunch on Saturday.

Knowing I have a bit of a thing for d-p hunters, he gave me an early Christmas present from this years Guild Show.

This was made by Dave Skinner from Port Elizabeth - a fairly remote port on the south coast - same town where Willie Paulsen lives

I have yet to confirm the wood and damascus make-up, but a few pics...

....a very, very big thank you, Steven

Wow! Merry Christmas to you, Paul!
That's a fine looking hunter!

Lovely knife. Thank you for sharing that, we don't see nearly enough fixed blades around here.

Absolutely stunning! And if Dave ever wants to visit the U.S., you can give him my address! ;) :D

Beautiful, and such a generous gift.

The wood reminds me of the tree in my front yard, it's not the same but has some grain similarities.
I don't know 100% but I believe it's a Japanese Hackberry of some kind.

Lots to like about this one. A wonderful present. Good for you and good for Steven

- thank you for all the kind comments.

Just received the lowdown from Dave:

The Veld knife was designed by Kevin Harvey MS as the non guild competition knife for the 2019 KGSA show.

I completed the knife in March 2019. Oal is 210mm. Blade is 100mm. Blade thickness at the ricasso is 3.95mm. Hidden tang construction.
My own 1070/15N20 random pattern damascus. Damascus guard with filed stainless spacer. Handle is K&G stabilized Hawaiian Silky Oak with a domed s/s pin. Embossed and wet formed cow hide sheath.

- agreed ;)

Probably got around twenty d-p hunters now (my favourite pattern), and I promised Peregrin Peregrin ages ago that I'd do a thread on them, so guess I'll have to get off my butt and do just that soon...

I'll join in if you do, Paul!
