So everyone knows about Jim Bowie and the Sandbar fight, but have you ever heard of Caravaggio? I first learned of him when one of his paintings was stolen from the Art Institute. I then looked at some of his work and was kind of blown away. He wasn't just another church hack-the guy could paint.
Anyway today I was watching the arts channel today and they had a piece about him. He was of humble origins and was orphaned at age eleven. In the later part of the 1500's, being an orphan was not exactly a fun experience. Things were pretty rough & tumble. As an adult, he carried a sword even though it was illegal. His painting career seemed to take off after he killed a guy over a tennis game. The balance of his life was short-productive and violent.
I found it interesting.
