Alright guys, I was cleaning up, and packing some stuff up today, and found the first two knives I made back in '92 and '93.Tony's first knives They're rough, but they where hand forged, and hand finished (copletely) I've come a long way since then, but keep in mind, I was 13 and 14 when I finished these.

Wow! That's awesome for a first knife- and going double edged on the second. Forging experiecence no doubt helps though.

Do you use propane or coal for your forge?

Thanks for the nice comments :)

Back then, it was a coal forge exclusivley, now it depends on what I'm doing. oh, and the horseshoe knife throws good too, never tried with the dagger. The dagger is balanced at the guard, (thanks to the big wrought iron ball pommel) can be dissasembled, and is 18" overall.

Cool :D
Did that horse shoe knife harden? I've been messing around with them making letter openers and stuff. Don't harden like tool steel, but they all act a little different, some have been alot harder under the hammer than others.
Horseshoes are fun to work with (I have a good supply of used one :D ), you can weld them up or forge them into things and people go nuts over it.

A friend of mine here localy made a small anvil out of forge welded together horseshoes, replicating one that was made on a specific expedition in the area when their anvil was lost while crossing a river. the one that I made hardened just a little bit, but I used cold salt water with detergent in it, in an attempt to make it as hard as possible. I'd bet it's only about RC 39-41 though, but haven't tested it.

Like I say, I was 13, and didn't understand yet that there where different types of steel (until someone told me, and helped me make that batch of "superquench")

Thats cool, I just wondered if you had found some that hardened. I quench them in water too, you can put a coarse edge on them they just won't take a real fine edge or hold it cutting hard stuff. My mom's been using one to open boxes and mail and really likes it.
