Early Lockup and Weak Detent... Anyone Else?

Since CRK is closed today I figured I'd make this thread before calling on Monday.

Picked up this Small Lefty today from the post office, purchased from a well known authorized dealer... definitely brand new. The lockup on this thing is around 30% and the detent is weak. Reminds me of a Hinderer, slight downward movement and the blade slides open. I know CRK shoots for 50-75% lockup and I've come pretty used to that. My two others settled around 60% and haven't moved in a year.

On my two other sebenza's I can give them a strong shake and the blade retains inside the handles, this one is quite different. I was just curious if anyone else has gotten one like this? One thing I love about the Sebenza 21 is the detent is nice and strong. To me it almost seems like the spring on this lockbar is weaker. Maybe that is causing the detent ball to not engage as strong?

Everything else on this knife is perfect, may be the best CRK I've ever got. Grind, centering, etc, everything is spot on.

I opened the knife up to do a little inspecting and it is definitely brand new, don't see anything out of the ordinary. The scales are also made in the same batch as my last CF Small (which has a nice strong detent and 60% lockup).

I'm going to call on Monday and probably send it in, but wanted to know if anyone else has experienced this.

Definitely a weak spring. Detent should be very strong as you know. When you close it there should be a nice click, almost as satisfying as the click when you open the blade. Send it in and I'm sure it's something they can fix in minutes. Wouldnt be surprised if someone just simply bends the lock bar a little bit

If its locking up early, something has to be trimmed I'm sure. Again as said above, a quick fix at CRK.

Could always just pop the pivot screw out and remove the blade. The lockbar should go all the way over to the other side.

Of course, don't adjust it yourself. If in doubt, send it in.

I just got a large Insingo that was locking up at 15-20% and had a very weak detent. Funny thing was I could tell that the detent ball was engaged the same as on any number of other CRK's that I own, didn't understand why thus one felt so weak.
My buddy Blackend gave me a tip that fixed mine and brought it to CRK perfection. Since the pocket clip on my Insingo was floating slightly above the lock ar when open and didn't have much pressure on it when closed I took it off( per his great advice ) and bent it slightly to create more tension on the lockbar, it worked perfectly!
My lock now sits at an immovable 40% and the detent is top notch- I couldn't be happier with this knife.

Give it a try, it may work for you too.

Good luck.

Lockup is easy to adjust, I have moved mine from 90% to 30% and then back to 60%. Just loosen the screws, and push the two scales in opposite directions lengthwise - front slab toward the pivot end to increase the lockup, front slab toward the lanyard hole end to decrease the lockup (or is it the reverse, I forget, just try either one to figure it out). Then just tighten the screws again.

I'm definitely no expert on the subject, but i would think the pocket clip really shouldn't add any significant amount of tension. on my small 21 a change in lock up is not noticeable with or without the clip. And it does touch the lock bar when engaged

Sounds like the complete opposite of the typical characteristic of a CRK. Usually it has a strong detent and really late lockup.

Thank you all for the responses, much appreciated. As much as I like tweaking Sebs on my own, I think this one will have to go back. I'd rather they work on it than myself for this issue.

It isn't really so much the lockup that concerns me since it is rock solid, but the weak detent bugs me. As I said, that strong "clank" on both opening and closing the knife is what I've come to expect. This one is more like a very soft click, to me it seems like a weak lockbar. Disengaging the lockbar is easier than my other 21's as well. I believe if I do the tricks to change lockup the detent will still be weak, even if lockup goes to 50%.

Pocket clip doesn't seem to make a difference in lockup or characteristics. On my other 21's with or without the clip it still snaps open and closes with authority, same lockup as well.

Kinda wonder what would be done at the factory. Don't know if they can just re-temper the lockbar or something to make it stronger?

Thanks again guys.
