I know its early to ask, but I need to request a few vacation days off work for this spring 2018 Gathering. Thanks guys.. Looking forward to it.

that's actually a very good question -- I'm not certain we can get E out of the Bitterroot Valley, even for a gathering.....

If anybody can make it out of that wilderness alive, it would be Mr.Becker!

from the pictures I've seen, it's pretty nice there.
I might be willing to wade my way in with a BK24 & a skillet, not sure I'd be willing to come back out.....

I wonder if he brought a bk20, bundock bowie. I always imagined I’d take one with me if I went voluntarily to one of the true wilderness of the USA. Have been to many,in Florida, Colorado, Arizona , etc. but the bitterroot always seemed kind of daunting. A .308 or .306 rifle would be almost as important as a knife. And in winter, wolfpacks can reach 30 or more in number. So enough ammunition as well. I’m sure none of this is a concern for Uncle Ethan, since the wolfpack’s leader is probably his pet. I’m thinking about my own abilities.

OK, then -- we need to start a plan for real.
just in case we don't have access to half moon ridge this spring, who has access to some acres -- or a line on a state/county park that would allow hooligans like up to descend on it for a 3-4 day weekend.
preferred location would be within 2 hours of Nashville, so more of the SE regulars can make it without adding significant distance to the other regulars.

critical item for something like this -- either outhouse, vault toilet, or portajohn rentals @ roughly $125 each for a weekend, which folks would need to help pony up funds for.

Southern part of d.boone in TN looks good, no? No fee for two weeks, I haven’t been in a long time, but there used to be all sorts of small roads and trails you couldn’t find a ranger unless you built a roaring bonfire. Could be the cartels are growing green there, I’d love to know if it’s still open.

I bring a small pocket shovel and bury the composte deep enough, and far away enough from trails and water source.
Shower curtains and toilet areas can be set up and taken down quick and easily, if there aren’t any facilities

there's a D. Boone park in TN?
I thought it was in Ky?

Big South Fork is or was once part of the D.Boone Natl Forest, I believe it’s now a separate recreation area. The only thing separating them is a state line.
I guess I was wrong, Big South Fork National recreation is what I should have wrote

Online permits for backcountry camping are $5 (for up to 6) no fees for entry or parking. I prefer backcountry camping, but others might rather reserve camping with amenities. Groups can meet in a predetermined parking area and hike to the preferred spot along the river or elsewhere. I’ve never been asked to show a permit, but my fires are pretty small and I’m usually wandering enough not to cause trouble. I’ve never had to saw an arm off with a sak, but that’s neither here nor there!

probably - since a lot of folks have spring break in March.
but Easter is early this year, so mid-April may be doable for most.
