Early website developement - feedback request

I've been working on a website to display some of my knife collection, organized by maker. Naturally I've started with Schrade - there will be a seperate page for Old Timers.

file deleted, since it didn't work

This is where I've gotten so far. The file is a website archive file (.mht) and it should open with Internet Explorer.

Any feedback is appreciated of course.

Thanks,
-Bob

Bob,
You're off to a good start on the opening page pics, however, none of the links work right now. Great idea by the way.

None of the links should work - the website hasn't been published online yet. Whatever links are present and active are only pointing to files on my computer.

THawk - I don't know why you aren't seeing the photos... Maybe I'll post a screenshot instead of a website archive file so everyone can see it.

Thanks for looking.

Here are some screen shots.

A bit farther down:

The plain space on the left is a result of the formatting. I'm setting the website up to be viewed with an 800 x 600 wide screen without having to scroll from side-to-side.

I've also tried to use colors and styling from the Schrade packaging for the Schrade page design. Don't know if I'll be able to do that for every brand or not.

Here's a screenshot of the main page:

I'm afraid the main page is going to be rather lame.

Could have something to do with IE Explorer 7. I see the screen shots OK.

Yeah, I don't think the "save as web archive, single file" is working like it's supposed to. Or at least not like it used to in previous versions.

I just wanted to give a sneak peak and get feeback, not actually upload the web page files anywhere.

The planned highlight of the website is The Old Timer Collection. I'm planning a main page with thumbnails of each model I have. Then click on the tunbnails and go to that model's page for closeups of tang stamps and variations. But it seems I have to wade through this Schrade/Imperial stuff to get to that point...

I'm also wondering how much host space all of this will take up...

Works well for guys like me on dialup. Also, I like the display style. I keep my "favorites" pulldown menu open while browsing, so the screen width you've chosen works for me. Good job!

That Wayback Machine site is incredible Bob. I hit July 5 2004 and you can apply for a job with Schrade and fill in application...Hello?

Larry, before you apply, consider the commute. Now, there are plenty of parking spaces, and you'll have a lot of elbow room, but I doubt the pay will be much. And you'll have to come up with your own knife trademarks like...Roo Hoo Knives, or something!

Michael

PS- Almost forgot...you'll have to approve your own application. And take a generator if you want lights. :)

And don't forget to sign up for the Schrade Collector's Club and the 100th Anniversary sweepstakes!

Bob,
The site is coming along nicely. I especially like your thoughts on collecting. When can we expect to see more? You've whet my appetite and looking forward to more.

Thanks for the comments.

I'm glad. The site really is nothing without photos. Couldn't skimp on the pics, but image file size was a consideration from the start.

All of the page information is kept within a width of 800. The purpose was for users with smaller screens to be able to see all of the content without scrolling side-to-side.

That Wayback Machine site is incredible Bob.
It used to get mentioned here on the forum quite a bit, but it hasn't been lately.

I especially like your thoughts on collecting.
Thank you. I did put that jibberish at the bottom so no one has to scroll through it to get to the good stuff.

I also have an introductory page ready - no knives. Just a small bit of information and eventually links to each brand within the collection. The next section will be The Old Timer Collection, because that's what I'm most interested in. Expect more Old Timer logos, a thumbnail gallery of each pattern, and each pattern will have it's own mini-page with closeup images.

Then it will be on to other brands - Camillus, Buck, Bruckmann, customs, etc.

Don't have a timeline for completion. I'm really still in the "fooling around with different software" stage.

Bob - I'm on my laptop from a hotel tonight. IE-6 and it shows up fine and looks very nice. Like that Ulster 55. I have a couple of those, although mine are both jigged delrin with the bigger pits. I like those 3 1/4" stockman. Have been trying to collect as many Ulsters as possible lately, since the Schrades are so damned high.

Bob, thanks for all your effort. I especially like the packaging identification, it's a great help to new collectors such as myself. When on Ebay sometimes the only way I can tell the new from the old is by the box it is pack in. The format you are using works very well on my antiquated monitor. Looking forward to your updates.

Thanks for looking. And thanks Don Luis for posting your specs; it's good to know that the page is viewable in alternative browsers.

A bit slow...
I noticed that too. It could be the free file hosting site where the page and images are stored - their own website is painfully slow. It could also be that the freeware WYSIWYG web page creator doesn't make the most clean code. Or it could just be the nature of a photo-centric web page that includes almost a megabyte of images.

Like that Ulster 55. I have a couple of those...
An interesting story behind that Ulster. It was actually sold as part of the Factory Collection Prince Albert set. But it should have been a 58OT instead. I wasn't upset since the mistake was obvious in the auction photos, and I already had a 58OT to add to the set.

Actually I feel that to me it gets slow because I'm using a Live CD with no hard disk, seems that memory gets tight and the system has to delete stuff from memory and later get it back from the CD, which is slower than using hard disk and swap.

I'm just playing with Xubuntu Live CD right now, later on will try with my hard disk system (Firefox 1.5 on Ubuntu Linux 6.06.1).

Luis

Edited: now from my hard disk system... much better, I would say loading speed normal for pictures, and no problems in Firefox 1.5.
