Early Week Hike

I only work on weekends right now, so I took the time to go out early this week and wander around in the woods. Couldn't work on any fire because of a burn ban. I tried to pack light, but I wanted to eat some good chow, so I had to drag along my single-burner Coleman with me. I am looking at some of the backpacking stoves because that thing is heavy and stupid.

The ride/gear:

I was going to ride the bike trail, but my left crank kept falling off. The nut backed off a couple of times. I got home and put some blue Loctite on there. Hope it fixes the problem. Or not. I am looking at a Mongoose.

I always have to take pictures of the plants. However, I fail on identifying them. So...here they are:

Twisted-Leaf Yucca:

They are serious about staying on the trails here:

Purple-flowered thing I should know by now:

No idea:

This is what I brought along:

It's a pretty light load. I had my bike tools, some water, a very basic FAK.

Fishing Kit:

Not pictured:

Stove, propane, chicken and other food in the ice chest.

if the "tapers" where the back of the crank presses onto the bottom bracket spindle is wallowed out(no longer square but rounded off) the crank will never stay on no matter what ya do. time for a new crankarm. maybe a bike shop in yr area has a box of used ones in the back. if you go for a new bike, be sure to check those crankarm bolts periodically. if they vibrate lose , it will happen again. and if you do get a new bike, do not loctite the threads on the bolts/nuts(they need grease and tightened once in a while) as you(or yr local bike shop)will need to be able to pull the crankarm if the bottom bracket needs service. if the crankarm cannot be pulled you will be right back where ya are.

here's a place in austin that can help ya.

the 21st St. Coop Bike Project
Address: 707 W. 21st St. in the backyard of the Coop
About: The 21st Street Coop is a community bike shop in the West Campus Area. They have tools, stands, parts and a handful of coordinators ready to assist anybody with biking needs. The shop is located in the backyard of the 21st St. Coop.

one more bit of unsolicited advice. if the mongoose you are looking at is in a big box store, consider checking with the guys above. your $ would be much better spent on a good used bike than a cheap one from walmart...will last ya lots longer, and fit ya right. often a good quality used bicycle that has been properly maintained will cost you no more, or even less than the new "bicycle-like devises" sold in big box stores. hope this helps.

Good stuff man. Nice Farmer!

Thanks for the blade, Jake. I get a ton of use out of that thing. It is pretty much the only knife I own that sees constant use from the field to work to whatever else I can think of.

I have that same pack for mountain biking. Nice!

It's a great pack. A little uncomfortable when loaded down with water, so I am trying to find a use for that inner pocket and lose the bladder.

Great pics buddy, looks like you were pretty well equiped !

Have ya checked out this titanium wood burning stove ?

Looks like a decent set-up, but we are stuck using gas down here for now. :( Stupid burn bans ruin all the fun. Nothing but containerized fuel.

The crank looked fine, but I will take a closer look. This bike gets used very rarely, so I just wanted the temporary fix. Thanks, though, I didn't know all that.

I know right where these guys are. I have been by there a number of times.

True. I am only in the thinking about it stage. I am planning an extended internship in El Salvador, so I don't know if I will be buying one any time soon.
