Hi,

Here are some pics from a day hike today in Whiteshell Provincial Park, Manitoba, Canada.

Temp was about -1 to -2 degrees Celsius, and it was snowing lightly.

Here is a nice dusting of snow:

This is a mushroom that a squirrel has put in a tree to dry... I'd heard about this behaviour on a Ray Mears show, but hadn't noticed it before:

This looks like a spruce snowflake :)

More to come...

Here's some of the gear I had. My new WSS patch found a home :)

Ended the hike with a nice spruce & pine tea, using a Honey stove. I love that little stove... I can still play with tinder, kindling, fire steel, etc, but it's not a big fire and it doesn't leave a mark on the rocks.

Walkabout, this shot is too cool. Temps here are starting to get into the 30's @ night, had our first dusting last week. Beautiful countryside, thanks for taking us with you.
Be safe.

Nice pics. I went squirrel hunting this afternoon and was sweating on the hike back!

I wish I could have gone along with you.

I believe the spruce is either white spruce or black spruce, but I'm not sure of the pine. Which species is it?

Thanks for the comments everyone :)

I'm pretty certain it's a white spruce.

The pine (that I used in the tea) is a Jack pine... sort of an eastern version of the Lodgepole pine, as I understand it.

Edit... Hey, this was my 500th post! It only took me 7 years :)

Thanks for sharing the pics! The spruce snowflake is very cool, and I like the looks of that stove, too.

Nice I'm jealous, we just have fog and rain in our parts right now and that will probably last through Dec. these parts :(

Great pics buddy, thanks for sharing them.

In all my time in the outdoors I've only ever come across the mushroom drying in the tree once as well, you'd think it would be a more common practice eh !

I wish we were getting some snow, even if only a little. Thanks for sharing, makes me look forward to winter even more.

Thanks for the winter teaser pics. I'm really looking forward to some snow on the ground.

Jeff
