Easier way to reprofile?

So most new knives I get need to be reprofiled to 30 inclusive so I can sharpen them at 40 on the Sharpmaker. I have a Lansky but don't get very good results when I try to reprofile. Would the DMT Aligner kit be a good choice? Not looking to spend over $50.

You might look into a DMT Aligner clamp by itself ($12 or so), and use it with a bench stone. A larger abrasive surface area makes a huge difference in speed, and the clamp will obviously help you maintain the angle. Maybe use a diamond bench hone, or not, depending on the steels you wish to re-profile. I've used my DMT clamp with a DMT Coarse/Fine Duo-Sharp hone (8"), and it's a very versatile combination. If not using a diamond bench hone, the next best bet would likely be something like a Norton Crystolon bench hone (silicon carbide), and the cost of both the clamp and hone would likely stay within your budget limit, or very close.

Obsessed is right. Any of the clamp systems are slowgoing because of the small size of stone. A bigger stone in finer grit will work much faster than a smaller coarse stone.
