Easiest Way to Carry Gig/Spear Tips?

Good Day,

I was watching Ray in Oz, and I saw that they used metal rods, or thick wire straightened to make their spear/gig tips.

Anyone know any easy way to carry this sort of item?

I mean, you would obviously make the shaft in the field, but with the metal tips, it might be best to take those with you.

David i usualyy make them in the field... an afternoon or 2 of practice and you save yourself the trouble of having to pack something you might not need... just my 2 cents.

I put three stiff wires (about 12 in each) in a 12 inch piece of 1/2 in PVC tubing and put a PVC cap on each end. When you want to use it, take the wire tines out of the pvc, stick the pvc on the end of a stick, then stick the tines back in the open end of the pvc tube and place some sticks between the tines to hold them apart.

i think gigs/spears are great to have in a kit and or B.O.B....

i have a normal 4 prong frog spear which has taken many frogs over the years..
i also have a TOPS Hoffman Harpoon.. a little pricey, but still a nifty little addition to a kit.. i got a nice kydex sheath made for mine...

and last but no least, i recently picked up a PSK/ferro rod striker from Rob of Center finger knives.. these things are way cool and will easily function as a spear/gig... Rob supplies them with a kydex sheath as well..

My thought was that a wire/rod stiff enough for the task could be a nice multi-use item.

Still kinda gathering information.

When I was a kid, I used to gig frogs and fish fairly regularly with a store-bought, 3 pronged affair specially made for the task. I had it permanently mounted on a sturdy bamboo shaft- about 6' long, that I used for a walking stick, and had a leather sheath over the business end of the gig. I would only take the thing out when I specifically intended to skewer critters though. It worked great, but it wasn't something I'd consider for a regular "survival" gear.

Gigging frogs can be tricky, and spearing fish even more so. I found the best way to successfully gig frogs was to get in the water, and stick the frogs sitting on the edge of the shore. And it's easiest to get fish if you can find a spot where the water is deep enough that you can get in with them and stick them while you're underwater with them. Which is about the least useful "survival tactic" imaginable. Perfect swimming holes- deep and clear enough to fish like that aren't exactly common. And even if you can find such a place, you're not going to want to try it 8 months out of the year.

Of course you can spear fish from the surface, but it requires a good amount of patience and skill.

I have had a lot of practice spearing panfish with my 3 prong gig. My favorite technique thats not in the water is to stick a small piece of worm on one of the prongs and spear the sunfish when they try to eat it.

I just found it much easier to build the whole rig on the spot. All I brought was some line. Of course, the area I used to gig had bamboo growing nearby so I had plenty of gig material...

Marion David,
I am trying to work out what sort of spear tip you are talking about?

That is the sort of the beginning of the thought process.

I don't know if I will build one. But, that is the genesis of this thread.
