Kids were all outside playing having a great Easter morning, when the oldest say's "I think you better check on Gregory, he's in the bathroom crying quietly and said that he cut himself". I know this child,.. no.1 he doesn't cry and no. 2 he hides when he gets a bad boo boo. As I look into the bathroom the blood says it all. I pushed the flesh back were it belonged and told him it would be all right and that we were just going to go to the hostpital to get a few stitches on it! Gregory is 11 he stands 5'3"and weighs in at 140lbs. Well., we made it to the kitchen!, Before his eyes roll back and he starts doing the funky chicken!!!The ER team say's to me "Hey aren't you that Knife maker." As I cry out in self deffence," It wasn't one of my knives!" He's never cut himself with one of my knives. This time... it was a Shrade Seratted 4" blade, Last time, I believe it was a steak knife! In hindsight I think that maybe I should have held off letting him use the Shrade yet. Well I suppose they have to learn right? I hope all of you had a great Easter!! Any one else have an ER Easter? By the way Gregory's finger took only four stitches, he cut the index finger from the middle knuckle to about the fingernail. Fillet, to the bone. should be OK if he can hold it real still for about a week.

Hi Audra,
Glad Gregory is OK. I think a 11 year old is plenty old enough for that type of knife and you know what? It happens to all of us...even us big kids. The other day I got a new handforged knife from S. African maker Kevin Harvey. It had a very sharp clip point and sure enough within a few minutes of opening the package I stabbed my thumb. It was such a clean puncture it didn't even bleed. I'm not even gonna tell you what I did to my finger on New Years with my Lamey knife

My 11 and 12 year old have a bunch of knives and I encourage them to be careful but carry one daily, especially here in rural Alaska. I rather take the chance of having them have a knife then be in the woods without one.

Happy Easter to your family,

Thanks Guys,
I don't know how many times he will cut himself, just hope and pray that it is never too bad. I can handle when I cut myself! But it is a whole new ball game when it is your babies! But he loves his knives, can't take em away!

This is how kids learn, some more than others. I've got one son in particular that has to learn everything the hard way. If you stop him from trying the hard way, he stops learning.

Just make sure that everyone keeps their tetanus shots up to date (including adults).

Thanks Jeff for the reminder about keeping those tetanus shots up to date. I think I am long overdue for one myself. If I remember correctly, they are good for 10 years now, and it has been around 14 years since my last booster. With my knife usage and hobby, I had better run off and get a shot now, because you brought it up! It's like knocking on wood once something is mentioned! What's that law say about what can go wrong will or something like that

Audra & Mike, glad your Gregory is okay, if he is anything like my twin boys are, I'm sure he didn't let that spoil his holiday though!

Mark,
I'll tell you what. If you come up to Kodiak I will give you a free tetnus shot just 'cause you're a good friend

. Hehehe. I know, I'm too nice.

I'll tell you guys what, the worse injury from any knife I have ever seen in my practice was a guy trying to part 2 frozen steaks with a steak knife. It slipped and he just punctured his palm just a tiny bit. He severed his felxor tendon and lost all use of his ring finger and 6 months and 3 operations later the hand surgeon still couldn't guarantee the reattachment. He didn't have one of those traditional knives we think about injuring ourselves with....just a ginsu.

Greg,

Thanks for the invite, but I think I'll let my Doctor's Nurse do it, she is much better looking

If it wasn't for her though, sure I would make the long trip to Alaska to let you give me the shot, what are friends for anyway!

Audra,

I feel for you...until I was in High School, I spent at least a portion of every major holiday in the ER. They knew me by first name, could recite my insurance number by heart, and kept my file laying on the admittance desk--no lie!

Even more frightening, there were several times that I would sit, holding various bones in place, and asked the RN who was probing at it, "You're new here, aren't you?"

I got a lot of strange looks as a child. At least now, the strange looks are justified...

STITCHES! Actually even with his arm in a sling he still got the most easter eggs!

Who says bigger isnt better!
And as for learning, if learning involves loss of blood he's been doing alot of that lately!

Believe it or not I have actually let him start forging.. after the first time he picked up the tongs without his gloves I don't think he will do that one again! And how he managed to drop the anvil on himself was beyond me! (it's on a 2ft stump) .. Well like you said " Live and Learn!" And like I said " Hope and Pray."
Audra, See ya all in Georgia!

Stitches, hot tongs, falling anvils... now there's a kid who isn't afraid to try! We need more kids out there who will give it a shot, even if we have to open more ER's!

Mark,
I thought your nurse was Frau Unibrow from Austin Powers.
