Eastwing handle

I have an Eastwing hatchet with leather handle that I have used for many years. The finish on the leather is beginning to crack. What is the best way to fix this before it gets any worse? The leather seems to still be in reasonably good shape with only the finish showing signs of age. Thanks in advance for any ideas.

There is some kind of laquer/polyurethane on those handles, for waterproofing I assume. It dries out and peels off. I sanded mine down to raw leather and used mink oil and a hair dryer to re-condition/waterproof it.--KV

Mine's cracked all to heck as well, I may sand it off and go natural with the mink oil...
