Does anyone know if Emerson intended the cqc-7 to be used in a reverse grip when used defensively? Its shorter blade length is about ideal in that application.

I think the cqc-7 was designed to be a great all around tactical knife, to be used as best fitting for the situation, if a reverse grip is ideal, then the 7 does well in that role. However, I'd hesitate to say that it was intended to be used in a reverse grip, but rather intended to be used in any grip that is beneficial to the situation

All Emerson knives I've handled feel equally comfortable in reverse grip, but that's just my opinion.

Yep, i would agree with this.
Carrying a waved Emerson in your back left pocket waves out right into a reverse grip.

Emersons are designed to have a full sized grip, which is why the blades tend to look a touch short.

I actually carry my Combat Karambit in my back left pocket, as it's my go-to self defense weapon due to an injury to my right wrist.

Well, the CQC-7 was designed by Ernie to be a fighting knife, through and through. Saber, hammer, reverse grips all work for it.

^Totally. I find the 7 to be a very primal tool. The straightness from tip through handle to butt mimics a sharpened stick, probably one of the earliest weapons devised. Most anyone can pick up a 7 and be immediately comfortable and effective wielding it in contrast to more exotic designs.

Thanks everyone! I've never seen any of Emersons dvds, does anyone know if he suggests a forward or reverse grip in his methodology?

While I no longer own a CQC-7 (sacrilege, I know!) I do own a Super 7 and, just like about all of the Emersons I've had, and it's been a bunch, it works well in all grips - as has been stated. Anymore, I have taken to carrying a right handed Emerson in my LF pocket using a reverse wave, which works as well, if not better IMO, and lends itself to immediate reverse grip use. The CQC-8 series is my favorite (all sizes) and more and more I've got a Roadhouse in my LF pocket if I'm not totin' a Banana Knife. They all seem to work great in reverse wave and reverse grip.
