Idea blatantly stolen from a post by someone on a different forum I can't remember. There's a commercial company selling these, only not in a plastic dog treat container. It's just a bunch of bamboo shish-kabob skewers cut in half with a bandsaw and dumped into a container. Knives of all sizes fit perfectly and you can fit a whole bunch more into the same space as you an with a traditional knife block.
I'm eventually going to make a nicely finished wooden box to match the rest of the kitchen stuff, but as a proof of concept this works great for the $8 in skewers I have invested.
