The year was 1910. It was a cold winter morning in the Catskills. Time had been passing ever so quickly as of late. To my mind, sometimes a man has to adapt to the changing seasons. The thought had occurred to me more and more as time passed and my manual dexterity diminished. With the cold of this day, a feeling of consternation came over me. Snap out it ,I said to myself. With age, comes wisdom, use it.
I am resourceful and surely I knew this was an eventuality. I turned and went back into the cabin and opened my old sea chest.
My tastes were peculiar, even in my youth. I remembered that old knife, small but with just the right advantage for my predicament now, that I took to sea with me, all those years ago. What a fortunate man I am, to have all these treasures in this old chest. There it was, the deep black ebony I remember, those beautiful swedges, and of course that one special attribute.
I examined the old knife I had acquired many years ago, and many a fond memory came flooding back to me. On the tang read, New York Knife Co., with the old Hammer Brand stamp on the mark side. I had picked it up just before shipping out and it had served me well. Now, many years have passed and it will serve me well, again.
