I found a plain edge satin Horseman as well as a plain edge black Horseman online, but the satin one is almost $70 more. Is it difficult to strip the black coating off an Emerson? Can I use a chemical stripper? or does it need to be abraded off?

It can be done of course but dunt do it.
It's needs to be abraded off.

Black is beautiful. Go for the Black, and you will love the character it develops with use.

I agree with Pennypincher! The wear it develops is great. However I do love the satin two tone Emersons

Well, this is somewhat embarrassing, but the pricing was for the partially serrated versions. The black plain edge is actually a few dollars more than the satin. So, hard decision averted.

Agree with Rolf. I did it to a mini roadhouse and a mini 7, wouldn't do it again. Just like it the way it is.

I would prefer my persian in a satin finish so I was considering removing the coating but I don't want to crate any issues with the knife

Yes I agree, but sometimes it is better to leave things be. Verses screw em up by messing with what should be left alone. Or send the knife into EKI for a reblade, as an option.

It's easy enough to beadblast it off, but then you'd have to refinish it again. On a black blade, I'd just have the bevels reground.

I've stripped a few knives but not a Emerson and the only way I would even think about doing it is if were used and I got it cheap or I voided the warranty. You never know what is gonna be beneath that coating it may look great or like sh*t . But it is easy to do and to each his own if you wanna do it go for it .

As far as the black coating, the Emerson website lists it as Cerracoat. Is it just CeraKote misspelled or is it something else entirely? Either way, it holds up great in the few Emerson I own that aren't stonewashed.
