well,, just thought I would show a few pics to all that were interested in how easy it is to refinish that Satin finish on your blade.

as you can see in the first pic,,my SFNO has seen much abuse and have recieved many scratches and scars from last years camping/wilderness survival excursions and various other chores around the camp sites that most other knifemakers would only dream that their knife could perform:eek:

well,,I just thought that I would get her ready for this coming camping season by giving her a good refinishing and make her look like new again and hope she serves me just as well this second season.

and for all that dont know and all that have been doing it the hard way (elbow grease and sandpaper),, there is a much better, easier and quicker way.

as you can see by the pics below,,all you really need to do is go to your local wal-mart, Auto Zone, Advance Auto parts, ect. and buy one of the Light Rust Removal discs to go with your hand drill,, and thats all it it too it, I think I paid about 7 or 8 dollars for the one you see in the pic,,,but wal-mart has them even cheaper.

then all you have to do it brush the blade lengthwise in even/contineous passes down the length of the blade,, and that is all it it to it,, you will be amazed at how simple it really is.

you can defenitly see a diffrence in the first pic and the last, and it took less than five minutes to do it:eek:

How hot did it get to the touch Daniel? I would just worry about getting it over that 900 degree line where you might smoke the temper. :)

with this setup,,,it didnt generate any heat at all..

with my humble Skil rechargable drill that you see in the pic ,,,we are talking a few hundred RPM'S,, absolutly no heat

no need to worry about effecting the temper of the blade because it dosent create any heat.

give it a try,,

you'll see

I have an original user AD that could use it. I just might. :D

Nice pics and info. There is a product that is for stripping epoxy and paint that I have used before. (I think the company was Jasco, or something that sounded similar)

Awesome looking finish man. I am SO glad you posted this thread. I was actually looking at those discs day before yesterday but decided against it due to not knowing how hot it would get the blade. So for the last two days I have been killing myself trying to take a Busse from black crinkle to a satin finish, I used stripper to get the coating off. Sweet deal, I'll go pick up the disk now. Low speed to get no heat.

Looks great, but don't you have to be careful you don't round off the lines of the knife? I suspect it would wreak havoc on my HR's grooves.

So to clarify, you sanded/polished the blade back and forth from choil to tip, and not from edge to spine? Might have to try it this weekend!
