Easy titanium refinish?

I have heard rumors that you can oxidize titanium and get a totally different finish using Oxi Clean and boiling water. Is this a proven method? Or a gimmick that lasts temporarily? Can it be reversed in any way? Any advice on this would be helpful, I have a Mayhem that's dying for a little customizing. If I like the results, the Sebbie is up next.

Bump!

This is an interesting question, but I sure would like to hear about some results from somebody else before I go trying it out;)

I agree completely. I read about it on the JD forum about a guy who tiger-striped his sebenza using the method, and there were a few positive comments on it. However the thread was so old that the pictures were long gone. I think i remember someone on either this forum or the KF forum talking about it too, also long ago.

Hmm I have a few titanium things I'm not terribly attached too, maybe I'll strip my M16-13T slabs I flamed and try the Oxi-Clean trick.

See I have some Ti rings that i was planning on testing, or my trusty Benchmade 42 (its seen worse than a little Oxi Clean!). Let us know on the results!

I don't think the Oxi clean on its own will do any thing to TI,they normally put it in a container and apply dc voltage to it,connecting the pos+ side to the TI and the Neg - to the anode also TI.
12v to 30v will get you a nice blue but don't touch the two connections together. http://mrtitanium.com/anodizing.html

See from what I understand is that is forces the Ti to oxidize, not a fact, just what I heard. I like the matte grey finish on Ti and am not looking to anodize (at least not yet). I think if it works, it hides the surface scratches.

Thats a cool website thought! I learned about something I was curious about.

i remember some guys doing this kind of thing with this on the Balisong forum, but i think i remember them saying that it was very hard to get an even finish, if doing the whole thing and you want it to be an even finish. could be wrong, but i think it comes out blotchy unless you do something like those stripes. hope this helps. check the Balisong forum, a lot of their balis are titanium handles.

So I think what im going to do is try to make a paste out of the Oxi Clean and try to coat the handles evenly before submerging them in the boiling water. Hopefully this will help to create an even finish on the final product.
You better believe Im going to practice on a couple of Ti rings that I have first, then the 42 or the mayhem, and finally, the Sebbie.

That link is really neat. I'm going to try that on one of my Ti Mini Cyclones. Thanks for the posting link, rangerover.

Well I posted this topic on several forums, and it seemed to generate a lot of interest. I was just grateful that someone took the time to dig around as much as I had! Thats why you gotta love the forums :D:thumbup::thumbup:

You can find Oxy Clean usually in the grocery store here in the US. Im sure that its widely available outside of the US, and for cheap I might add. If not, let one of us know, we'd be happy to send some down for you.

BE AWARE:
OXY CLEAN and OXI CLEAN are 2 very different products. Here is the active ingredient breakdown according to their MSDS:

OXI CLEAN:
12-18% Sodium Percarbonate
25-35% Citric Acid

OXY CLEAN:
10-30% Potassium Hydroxide
5-10% Sodium Hydroxide
10-30% Sodium Hypochlorite

i know you can torch anodize it yourself i have seen charlie mike do it on some clips and some blades and it turns out good give you that custom look
