Does anyone have a suggestion for an easy to build target for knife and hawk throwing. My 12 year old son will be working on his Knife & Hawk Merit this summer, so I need to get started on a target.

Thanks for any suggestions,

Go to a saw mill and get a round of a fairly soft wood. The larger surface area the better. It needs to be thick enough to resist splitting. Then put two screw on hooks onto the top side of the round. String a chain between the two hooks and hang the whole thing from a third hook screwed into the side of a sturdy tree.

I know it is not wood but I worked at a factory that was throwing out some old gaylord boxes made out of inch and a half thick cardboard, it worked great for my col stell throwing knives to learn on with breaking anything. You might make a frame and layer up some cardboard a few inches thick to start with. I am going to make another so I can practise / play with. it is good to start with. Pat

A trick I learned a while ago was to cut the round straddling a whorl of knots/branches. It will make the block almost impossible to split.

2x4's stacked on top of eachother then glued together. Easy cheap, and lasts a long time. Atleast mine has.
