I want to clean the residue from the laser etch off the scales of my 5 without taking the scales off. I know soap and water will do it but I don't want to run the knife under water. Anything else that will do it?

You could try a pencil eraser. Honestly though, run that sucker under water. You will not do the knife/coating/scales any harm. Three seasons of deer hunting and my RC-3 is just fine. I wash it with warm soapy water every time I skin a deer. No problems yet.

So just use soap and water without taking the scales off? The water underneath won't cause a problem? How fast do you think it'll evaporate?

Yes. The water will not cause a problem. I also have a RC-6. If I'm doing meat prep, I'll use it and the RC-3. I wash both in warm soapy water when I'm done and lay them out to air dry most times. I'd say the micarta on the RC-6 dries in about 4-5 minutes. I've had the scales off both. Zero issues. I don't even have any staining on the etchings. So, like I said. Wash that sucker and don't worry about it:D

You'll have no issues running the whole knife under water. The scales dry very quickly. If you want to hurry them along, gentle using the hair dryer dries them out quick. The best thing I've used for cleaning the scales is a fingernail brush. You can get them at auto parts stores, etc for about $1. For cleaning grease, etc out from underneath your nails.

Ditto.

My canvas micarta scales get really dark and dirty after alot of use. Blood from field dressing big game also kinda soaks into the canvas and leaves a smell if not cleaned.

I just put the whole knife in warm soapy water, scrub the scales a little, rise in hot water, and set out to dry.

The scales look factory fresh!
