easy way to remove Becker coating?

I've posted this thread on the Becker forum, but no one's biting, so I thought I'd try it here:

The coating on my Becker BK7 is badly scratched and worn off in a lot of places as a result of regrinding and all around hard use by its previous owner. So, I want to remove the rest of the coating and give it as nice a satin finish as I can using only hand tools. Anyone have a good idea on how to remove the coating and satin the blade by hand? I'm thinking 400-600 grit sandpaper and maybe steel wool, but I'm no expert. Suggestions appreciated.

use lower grit paper to start, 120 maybe, after the coating is off move up slowly, 200, 400, 600 etc as high as you want to go.

I agree, get some sandpaper (wet dry is good) in different grits, probably 150,220,320 and 400 would make things go fairly well. Basically it just takes time an elbow grease.
I think Bruce Evans has a tutorial on his web site for hand finishing a blade. Check it out, it should lay things out nice and easy for you.

Get some Duplicolor spray on paint stripper at Walmart (in the auto body section) give it a good coat, wait a few, and then peel the finish off with a razor blade

I have used this with both BKT and Cold Steel coatings.....although you might have to give it a second coat.

Rifter, Matt & XRAYED, thanks for the helpful advice! I'm definitely going to try the paint stripper and then work the scratches out with sandpaper. I'll try and post pics when I'm done. Just one question - is this the Bruce Evans site referred to: http://www.customknifedirectory.com ?

Thanks again!

Thanks - that pretty much answers all of my questions! Now all I have to do is make some scales and I'm on my way to a production custom blade!
