I know this is not a new idea, but I sharpened my Fiscar x150...22inch long AXE today using my Lansky Diamond sharpener and it cuts paper almost as good as my small EDC knives, which is insane to think an AXE can be as sharp as a SAK or Folder.

Basically, just put one of the Lansky guided sides flat on the AXE shaft and hold it with one hand (you could use wood clamp too for quick release and more steady) I used duck tape and it worked great too and free hand.

I use a small c-clamp to hold the guides on each side of the axe.

I sharpened this Estwing like that.

That's really good. I am picking up a C-Clamp just for that or Maybe a slim Visegrip or something like that.

I bet if you let buddies borrow that axe the look they get when they see how sharp it is must be priceless.

The C-clamp I use is a short deep one, works great for this.

A few weeks ago a friend was in my shop looking at all axes/hatchets and as usual he picked that one up, everyone picks that up to look at it. I told him to be careful, it's very sharp. Ten seconds later he ask for a paper towel, his finger was bleeding. He said he must not have believed me. He was a man about it at least and wrapped a paper towel around his finger followed by duct tape. He wasn't the first to bleed including me.

That axe is about 30 years old, been on many camping trips, hauled around in the back of my truck, used and abused. A few years ago I felt sorry for it, it looked bad. Not sure why I cared about it since it once took a big chunk of skin out of my calf.

It was a blue Estwing campers axe, now it's a little different and I don't want to use the darn thing because I worked a long time on it.

So sharpening an axe the way I did in my opening post it was a real pitta.
I went to my local Harbor Freight and found the Swivel Table Vise.
http://www.harborfreight.com/2-1-2-half-inch-table-swivel-vise-97160.html

It actually allows my Lansky guided system so I never adjust anything on it. Just clamp in the axe head along with the guided clamp and that's it. they I put it on 25 degree and it actually made my AXE incredibly sharp scary to think an AXE can be as sharp as a small fixed blade.

Here is the system at work:

I never thought of using my gatco like that. Thank you for the information

The best part is you only put the axe once and leave it there. You don't adjust anything or turn over the axe to do the other side like you normally would using a lansky guided. This is the exact same way the wickededge sharpeners work and hence where I got the idea.

It only works on AXE's this way but I suppose if I had a tiny swivel vise I could try using my EDC fixed blades to see if it worked.

I am pretty jealous of that swivel vise. we don't have harbor freight in Canada but I am going to try and get something like it here.

If you prefer a convex edge on your axes (like I do), you can bend a gentle curve in the guide rod attached to your stone. Then that same gentle curve will be applied to the axe edge.
