We all have heard about desperate people boiling leather to eat, for all I know, that may have happened in the distant past when animal skins may have had something left in them. I always believed the stories of WWII Russians boiling the wall paper that had been hanged on the walls with a flour glue.
With the growing expertise in biodegradable technology maybe someday this link will seem prescient.
