Thanks for the replies to my previous thread "Please help me decide.." I always appreciate input from all of you.
So I went back to my local knife store today to return my sharp-as-a-bowling-ball Nimravus Cub. As I mentioned in the other post, I wanted another Benchmade. First look was the 750. They only had one in plain edge and it was butter knife sharp with a lot of deep scratches on the blade. Second was the 710. Nice, but I've got the 705 already and a 730 on the way. So I figured I could hold out on another Axis lock for now. The Dark Star is well made, but I'm not into gold colored anything.
Here's where I take a nice juicy bite of crow. I went with an AFCK, specifically, an 800 w/ plain edge, no coating. I've decried these heavily in previous threads- and I have heard many pros and cons for the AFCK. I had to pick through the three they had in the display case, but the one I got seems nice. Blade is sharp, (although a quick strop on cardboard made it closer to a 'Spyderco' edge)Lock-up is as solid as any good linerlock I've owned, and I'll be d*mned, it really is a pretty comfortable grip. I dont' see any handle flex or lateral blade play, either. The only thing I don't care for is the dorky looking "Bali-Song" stickers at the back of the handle.
So I admit it publicly- I was wrong. This is a good knife and I'm glad I picked one up. Best knife ever? Nah- but it's pretty well done apparently. I've looked at them hundreds of times before and thought man those are hideous. For some reason I figured I check one out finally- glad I did.
I do agree though, if you can, handle a few before deciding on one. If I would have gotten one of the other two 800's in stock, this post would have had a different tone. I have no doubt Benchmade can make a really good product, but there seems to be a problem with consistency.
There it is, I concede. There really is a quality to the Benchmade AFCK.
