Hello all. First post in this section anyhow. Here is the question to ponder, I am in the market for a new scoot and have been looking at ebay auctions on Harley Davidson motorcycles. Some of the buy now prices are very surprising. Such as 7K for a bike that is worth well over 20k. Should these auctions be trusted? I have looked locally and haven't found anything that suits me as of yet. A couple of the ebay bikes would more than suit me.

Now has anyone ever purchased a large item off ebay such as a motorcycle? Was it what the seller said it was? Anyways any and all info is greatly appreciated. Keep'em sharp

Welcome to Gadgets & Gear, a more appropriate location for a thread on purchasing equipment! :D

I have not..
But you hear great stories and the horror stories.
Need to really check them out thoroughly.

You should start by asking the seller enough questions that you get an idea that he really knows what he's talking about. If his responses are inaccurate or lackadaisacal before you buy, what will he do for you if the bike's not as advertised afterwards?

Some are really good deals, others are scams. Common sense goes a long way - if the deal sounds too good to be true, check it extremely thoroughly before you commit and send money.

Look at the feedback scores, if all the positive feedback is on magazines, various nick-naks, and other cheap items, and this is the first "big" item, use extra caution and check it out thoroughly.

Common sense kept me from getting burned on a BMW.......

Great response! If they don't want to answer questions or can't you have the wrong guy! A good friend of mine bought a great bike off of Ebay with a snipe bid (I know, some folks think that is "cheating.") after lots of questions . . . he loves it and got it for a steal!

Follow Ed's advice.

READ THEIR FEEDBACK

Read that again and keep it in mind.
Personally, I wouldn't buy such an expensive item from a seller with less than several hundred positive comments in his feedback profile. Less than 99% positive feedback is not acceptable for me either when it comes to high-dollar purchases.

Set yourself a limit you won't break. Bidding when the auction is about the end can tempt some people to "bid what it takes" to win the item.

Also, don't be too optimistic several days before the auction ends. The price increase during the last hours of a popular auction is significant.
I recall bidding on a knife that would have been an awesome bargain just 20 minutes or so before the auction ended and I was the highest bidder - the knife ended up being more expensive than some online retailers charge for it (I didn't win it of course).

If you're willing to invest some time and effort and place your bids wisely, you can make dozens of "bang for the buck" purchases per year - I know I do.
