Well, I thought I had a good deal going.

I ran across the following ad on ebay the other day with the following description:

"Emerson Knife - CQC-7B-BTS
BTS- Black Finish Serrations
Condition: Unused, new

The CQC-7B is by far the most sought after folding knife of all time. It is the razor sharp chisel ground knife that has become the standard by which all hard-use folding knives are now judged. This is the knife that revolutionized the entire cutlery industry. Every knife company has their version of this knife but they fall far short when compared to the "real deal." Now the knife is available from the Originator, Emerson Knives.

Handles Black G-10 epoxy / glass laminate
Lock Aerospace grade Titanium
Blade 154 CM
Finish Black or Satin Finish
Grind 'B' Blade - Chisel Ground Tanto Style
Overall Length 8.0 in.
Blade Length 3.3 in.
Handle Length 4.65 in.
Blade Thickness .125 in.
Hardness 57-59 RC
Weight 3.8 oz."

The auction had 30 minutes left and a bid of $75. Needless to say, I won the auction and paid my money ($90.50 shipped). I received the knife today and, to my shock/ surprise, it was an EMERSON CQC-7A with the SPEAR POINT BLADE.

So, what are your opinions? I don't know which of the two models most blade afficionados prefer and why? This one does not have a chisel grind and is certainly a more traditional looking knife, but I thought the chisel grind tanto would be very interesting for EDC.

What are your thoughts? Should I send it back, or is the CQC-7A a keeper?

Thanks in advance,

the majority of people tend to stay away from tantos.

except for emerson collectors, like me, who like both. the spearpoint seems to be less common, so id say keep it.

and at that price, it seems a bit of a steal.

I think $90 shipped for any Emerson is a damn good deal. Maybe try contacting the seller and notify them and see if they'll ship you the correct knife but just hope that they don't charge you more for it.

You can challenge it through eBay, you can contest it with your credit card and have the payment reversed or you can always do Judge Judy.

Speaking of which, as an eBay user, you'll have to see this to believe it! Man oh man!

I'd definitely at least bring it to the attention of the seller. All sellers are responsible for making sure their auctions are accurate, and the seller sent you a different item than you bought, that's not ok.

If you like the knife, great, but they seller should know either way.

Yes you got a good deal, but how do YOU feel about getting a different knife from the one initially bidded for? So far, you seem to be ok with either knife. Anyway, it could be a genuine error on the seller's part. Just contact him about it and ask for a swap.

I sent an email to the seller to find out if he just put the wrong knife in the package, or if he just didn't know what he was selling. The picture he used in the auction looked to be the same as is used on the Emerson website (i.e. a file photo) of a CQC-7B, but the actual knife being sold was never shown. The description also is of the tanto model.

We'll see what he says.

I am contemplating just keeping this one, as the spear point seems like it would have some EDC utility.

Thanks for the input, and I'll let you know what he says.

Have you ever had/used a tanto chisel grind? I've had two (one a Benchmade, the other a Protech) and got rid of them both as I just don't like a chisel grind. It works for some folks, but if you've never used one, you might be better served with the v-grind.
all da best,
rats...

I appreciate the insights. Sometimes the "interesting grind" or "unique shape" just doesn't stack up to the tried and true good old basic knife shapes we have all grown to love.

Thanks again,

CQC-7A's are COOL! Keep it, in the future you may want a 7B, a classic to be sure. But, much easier to come by. I love the A's.

lotsa folks love the spear point EKI's but i'm not one of them, especially on the '7, to me a '7s not a '7 unless its a tanto, its not a bad deal at $90 though, just depends on if ya like it or not.

The "A" is more of a utility knife. The "B" would be the SD knife. Whatever you decide, you have a great knife.

ethically, you should tell the seller that he sent you the wrong one(if you are willing to keep it,say so).

It seems like he made an honest mistake. Whether that's true or not, I'll never know.

He offered to do whatever I wanted (i.e. I could send it back or keep it). I told him I would keep it.

Thanks to all of the Emerson afficianados. I am sure one day I will be picking up the 7B version.
