I have some Swedish fire steels and was wondering if the cheap ebay ones(I have also seen some cheapies elsewhere) are any good???

I would not want to "cheap" out on something so important.

Thanks

Craig

I recently bought a lot of the 10 (megaphoneplus was the seller). They work great. Throw a ton of sparks. I'm making up some custom firesteels out of them and have been completely happy.

I wondered too, but they work fine. YMMV with the seller of course. Some of the commercial ones are just over priced, IMHO, but I'm a cheapskate too :)

I just recieved 10 1/4 x 2 1/2 ferro rods from Bens Backwoods. I ordered them on the 23rd. & got them on the 26th. very good quality & service $3.00 a piece. s&h $3.99, pretty good on shipping charges.

Ben's has been 110% for me. He carries a lot of stuff of interest to the denizens of this forum :thumbup:

Bens Backwoods...do they have a website?

I am currently working on a small wilderness blade and have been toting around the prototype(aka mine:D) for months now. I just got finished my first leather pouch sheath for it(been using kydex till now) and think I may put a loop for a fire steel on it. If/when I start to make them for sale I want a good firesteel to go with them but 15 bucks from my local outdoors store will most certainly drive the cost up on the overall package. I want to save money but not with a crappy product.

Thanks for the info guys

craig-- sounds like a cool knife... i'm liking the sounds of this wilderness knife... make sure you post some pics, when you get a chance....

Damn you guys...just finished putting an order in at Bens....paypal to boot, never had to leave my couch:D:D:D
They even have canteens:thumbup:...been looking for one.

I'll get some pics up in a day or so with the new leather sheath

I picked up my first firesteel and a light my fire spork from bensbackwoods, lots of cool stuff there.

I have one of the sporks, I got it over Christmas and use it at work. They have lots of cool stuff...I could have gotten into real trouble fast:D

CKE2 nice small knife in your avatar pic..care to give the specs and larger pics? Looks like a Gil Hibben I have, except his has a hole lightened handle, scaleless too. It seems to make the balance neutral, which I prefer as opposed to 'handle heavy', due to the blade grind which is hollow ground on Gil's.

Here are a couple of pics of my personal knife. On the smaller side(but I am working on a larger 4 inch or so bladed version with a full size handle) but that is what I wanted, something easy to carry and you won't mind carrying it all the time. The weather has been 40 below so I have not gotten outside to take a good pic of my first attempt leather pouch sheath for it.

Tracker, that is my Micro Bleach model...actually it has come a long way since that one was made. They are around 5 inches overall with a blade just shy of 2 inches. Most until now have been made out of 1/8th stock O1 and 440C but I do have a couple batches in D2 and CPM 154 to try out. Last two pics are of the first one I made. That is a Nano in the pic.

Take Care

After reading this thread, I went to the bay and got a lot of 10 pcs. The rod material was just a bit more in cost than I spent for 1 store bought REI model and works just as well.

I threw this one together in a short time and works like a champ!

I wanted to throw one more shout out to Bens. Two orders in the last couple weeks, no problems, quick delivery and free shipping for order over $100 in US.
