Hey guys. How many of you buy knives from eBay. There are sellers with prices that are very low and include free shipping. Are these counterfeit? There is a Recon 1 for $77.01, that's a really good price.

It could go either way, I have bought quite a few knives on eBay over the years but you have to do your due diligence on each seller because there are many fake dealers on the site. That being said, I bought a fully serrated Recon 1 in XHP for just under that price a year or so ago. The fully serrated models don't seem to move very well and you can find deals on them from time to time (Spyderco included).

BF sponsoring dealers are the way to go if you want to be 99.9% sure the knife is real but I have had much better luck on the bay than amazon.

I buy a lot of knives from ebay, but I've been collecting for over 25 years, so I know what to look for in terms of fakes, shady sellers, etc. There are a lot of them out there, so you need to be careful and do your research. Anything from another country, especially China, is a red flag. And if the price seems way too low you should be suspicious. You can score some great deals, but if someone is selling a $200 knife for $20, chances are it ain't legit. It also depends on whether the seller is a dealer and selling brand new, or just someone who bought it, didn't like it, and is re-selling it. Even if they didn't really use it, they're not going to get top dollar since it's technically used (even if they claim otherwise).

I buy lots of knives on eBay and have never bought a fake. As others have said, you have to know what to look for and it helps to be very familiar with using eBay. Always check the sellers rating and location. Know what the fake knives look like before bidding/buying.

Some people buy fakes, and never realize it. ;) Ebay is also the best place to dump fakes. I purchased a few "new Knives" that were actually used/damaged/returned. When I returned them, the seller would put it right back up for sale for some other sucker. I despise using Paypal, as well.
There are some honest sellers on Ebay ( I knew of 3), but I prefer established online dealers like Knifecenter, Blade HQ, etc. I use about 6 different online dealers. You don't have to wonder, or worry. You can get just as good deals if you are patient, and check the sites at least a couple times per week. I got a brand new Recon1 for $65 a couple of month's ago. Cold Steel {Special Projects) is having a ridiculous 'Summer Sale' right now.

Thanks for all the info. I have bought through Blade HQ several times. They always seem to have good prices and I know they are legit. I have bought a couple knives off eBay with no problem. Blade HQ has Recon 1 for $99.95 plus shipping, eBay vendors $77.01 free shipping. I just wonder how can they sell so much cheaper.

Check the blade steels. The Ebay one may be AUS8, or BD1. The one on Blade HQ is S35v (premium steel).

I dont care for it other than old stuff out of production. current stuff I head to the good listed dealers here that support this site and care about their name and this industry. worth the extra few bucks it used to be.....now with the map pricing cold steel is using....its a lot more than it used to be. now I just buy a whole lot less than I used too.......as an example last year I had about a half dozen or more cold steels by this time. year over year I mean. this year only the ad10 and ad15 before the price increases map game began. since the map, not a one. doubt i will buy anymore this year with map in force.......

The eBay listing I think you’re referring to looks legitimate to me for a new s35vn recon 1.

I've generally done very well from Ebay , with some aggravating and time consuming exceptions !

You've got to be careful and check out the individual seller's recorded feedback . Also look at the pictures and read everything carefully .

If you do have some problem , take it to Ebay / PayPal arbitration and be polite and patient with the claims process .

Also , DO NOT give your customer feedback until you are sure everything is good . The decent sellers care a lot about their feedback rating .

I've not once failed to eventually receive satisfaction .:thumbsup::thumbsup: YMMV !

There are a lot of fakes. If you know what you're looking at, it's a good place to buy.
Recently I bought a new Ti Lite Aluminum from a private seller on eBay. It had an obvious defect (huge detent play when closed) but he claimed to be unaware. That would never happen on BF.
That bad experience was an exception for me.
