EBay 'Police' pic's doctored?

My best guess is its a low res. crappy picture. Don't know what could be worth hiding or airbrushing out...

The pictures are low-res and out of focus. But, a lot of things really look questionable about that to me. The seller says it's from the '80s so maybe it's ok. I'm no expert on Spyderco. What I can tell you is that it looks different that the Police models I've seen.

The buyer does say that it's "New Old Stock!".

As far as I know the police model doesn't have "police model" etched on the blade, it only has "police" etched on it.

I think the clip is supposed to have the little spider on it. Also the model number given is wrong. Its not 1007R-SER its c07. All of Spyderco's model numbers start with a letter.

I'm pretty sure of this as well--that's the first thing that struck me as wrong.

This is what it's supposed to look like--pretty similar except for the wording. And it does look like there's the Spyder logo on the clip.

Some of the old ones did in fact have "POLICE MODEL" on the blade. See this old ad on my website: http://spyderads.tripod.com/vision.htm

Of course, in the ad that I have pictured, it does say "SPYDERCO" also. In the EBay photo, it looks like you can see the "SEKI JAPAN" marking.

I don't know about the box, though. I have no idea if Spyderco has always used the "c" number system. They have changed model numbers in the past...

EDIT - and regarding the clip: clips change frequently with different variations or generations. Sometimes clips will have patent info, sometimes they'll have the bug, etc etc. You'll see this on Benchmades too.

I stand corrected--my bad.

Thanks for the replies fella's,

I was aware of the old style "POLICE MODEL" etched blades from an old copy of Tac' Knives. They should the evolution of the model in an article on Spyderco's historic rise to fame.

I, too, thought the "SEKI-JAPAN" might be lurking in the picture. But at the ricasso of the fully serrated one it really looked to me like there was a 'splotch' of grey right where it should say "SPYDERCO". Just looked wierd to me.

I have no idea of the history of Spyderco labeling, or whether or not they ever used those numbers for the Police model or not.

Perhaps a trip over to the Spyderco Forums may be in order...maybe not, I alreayd have an SS Police model :)

not to mention I have (5)new Grecos to pay for-OUCH!

heheh,

Yep, I'd say it's real also. Although I have never done business with him, this seller has auctioned many old Spyderco, Cold Steel, etc.... products through out the years. Mostly mid 80's vintage.

You could send the seller an email and ask him to describe the markings on the knife. That would increase your level of comfort.

Be forewarned, the seller may decide to update his listing with the answers to your questions.

Mongrel,

The knife is legit.

Originally, Spyderco used the 1007 as the model # for the Police model.
The early clips listed the patent numbers and did not yet have the bug logo.
The "POLICE MODEL" etched on the blade is also original, since then, "POLICE" has been used as well as some with no name at all.
early spydercos did not have the blade steel type etched on the blade.
Also, this seller seems to be very trustworthy with lots of feedback.
