Hi,

I have a couple customs for sale which I think eBay might be a better venue for than Bladeforum. Is there a place here on Bladeforums where I can announced them? Or is it verboten?

Thanks,

JD

Linking to your live eBay auctions is not allowed on BFC. Period.

Post questions about Bladeforums policy in BladeForums.com Service and Support.

Post announcements of your ebay auctions at www.ebay.com

eBay has an excellent search engine. Anyone interested in buying a custom knife on eBay can use that search engine. eBay also has the favorites feature which e-mails notices of selected searches automatically. Again, anyone interested in buying a custom knife on eBay can use those facilities. On any given day, there are tens of thousands of knives offered on eBay. If we let everyone "announce" their auction here, Spark's server would crash.

In the balisong forum, it's ok to link to a live eBay auction as long as you're not the seller or shilling for the seller AND the reason for your link is that you want to discuss the knife or the auction.

"Auction spotting," posts in the form of "lookie, lookie, there's a knife on eBay," are not allowed. But, posts in the form of, "Do you really think that that's a Jody Samson blade?" are.

From a Server Resource point of view; what's to stop some putting a link to their knife auctions in their sig line?

Nothing... I suppose... 'cept all of the moderators... and all of the other members who might click on the "report post" icon. Other than that, nothing.

Yes, but it's contradictory to your premise that it clutters the forums or strains bandwidth.

A member can have a link to a commercial website in his sig. Large banners are not allowed, and Registered Users pasting in advertising in every post and pretending it's a sig is not allowed either.

Regarding Joss' question I was correct in telling him that it is not allowed. He wants to link to his eBay auctions. That is still not allowed. Personally I don't like the idea of allowing linking to auctions for discussion. Why is it necessary to link to an auction to discuss a knife? How do we ultimately know that the poster is not the seller? Do we just ask him and take his word for it? I think it's bad policy to allow any linking to auctions. It hypocritical to allow it for discussion but not for sales. We need to come up with a clear cut answer. We can't have it both ways. Either yes or no.

What about BRL's forum? Many of the most interesting and informative discussions I have read there come about because of a linked auction and I would hate to see that change.

This is all a lot of irrelevant nonsense. Yes, sometimes we have links to dealer websites including ebay auctions that are not for the purpose of advertising, but that doesn't apply here.

These rules all seem like common sense - which, has been noted innumerable times, is "not so common".

I apologize for not understanding all of the rules about ebay. So a little more about it please.

I do understand that you may not reference your live ebay auction with a link.

I thought that you could not link to a live ebay auction at all, but may, after it closes, for discussion.

But, the above quote says you may link a live auction for discussion if it is not yours, or you are not shilling it.

Or does this apply only to the balsong forum?

I did try searching for the answer, but so much to look at. Sorry...

Thanks,

If you're in any doubt at all wait till the auction has ended. Then no one can accuse you of shilling.

Ok,,, Valid point..

I was thinking more along the lines of clarification of rules, everyone on the same page, same rules apply to everyone, or exceptionss for some, kind of thing.

If there is a place here I can read all the rules please point me there.

Thanks, I appreciate it.

Larry

It's not that difficult. There's a link to the FAQ at the top of every page. There's a Sticky: Quick and dirty rules; or, How not to get Banned from BladeForums.com at the top of this forum that explains the same rules in different words, so if you can't understand one you ought to be able to understand the other.

Some forums have rules of their own, with sticky threads to explain them.

How do we know when spammers are shilling their own web stores & auctions? Usually it's very easy to tell. Occasionally we have to investigate a little. I would rather not explain any of the ways we catch them here where the spammers can read everything I post. Most of them are pretty durn stoopid, but they can read.
