I took the advice and used the ebony handle slabs for this bowie. The blade is 11 inches long with a 400 grit hand rubbed finish of forged O1 tool steel. I selectively quenched the blade and utilized a triple temper. The false edge is not technically sharp but a few passes on a hone would get it very sharp. I like the look of the ebony but this stuff is extremely hard!! Only new belts would cut it without burning it.

Super knife!!

I like the pins in the handle at the whole knife has a great look.

Yep...the ebony is a devil....I am not sure if is difficult because of its hardness or the amount of resin that is in it. I remember the last time I used ebony, it clogged up two semi-new 60 grit belts.

How was the O1 to forge? I have a bunch of it in my shop and havent used it yet. Is it pretty stiff under the hammer?

Again, beautiful knife......makes you want to take it on a riverboat trip! :)

Nice piece, you have all my favorties in it spear point, coffin handle & ebony. Can't get much better than that.

Thats a beauty,I really like the ebony and pins, and great blade shape. It sure is fun when it all comes together.:D Great job.

Thanks everyone!

X-rayed,

Go ahead and forge some of the O1, it is a little stiffer under the hamer than the 5160 but it isn't to bad to work with. You can get a wicked sharp edge with it.:)

That is a beautiful Bowie, C-Camerer! The length of the blade seems just right for that gorgeous handle. I sometimes a little willy/nilly on coffin handles. This one I'm willy. Whatever that means.

I really like the handle, and the silve pins. Really glad you went w/SS for the guard. Guess wrought iron would have been okay or damascus, but the brightness of the SS really stands out nicely against the black of the ebony. Great!

WOW!!!!!!!
That is a really classy looking Bowie.Everything works well together.Congratulations.

That is very nice, I agree wholeheartedly with Indian George on this one! What width stock did you start with for a blade that size?
