hey everybody!
just finished a knife here..
this was a commissioned peice, so i was working off a rough sketch, and i also had an exact picture of what the tsuba was supposed to look like. the hamon was supposed to be "interesting" so here is what came out

Specs:
OAL: 17.5"
blade length:11" convex traditional grind
steel: W1 differentially hardened with choji hamon (water quench)
Mirror polish, no etch for hamon
Copper habaki, Blackend steel tsuba, brass pin
Handle: Ebony and Bicote with fiber spacer, finished with tung oil
Sheath: Hand chiseled ebony and bicote, smooth fit
SHARP! *puts band-aids on his wounds*
Construction: take down. tightly fastened with brass pin, but no glue. (my first knife like this)

to see the whole knife precess and better pictures of the hamon go here:

i guess the pics say the rest. i etched the blade, but didnt like how it "flattened" the hamon, so i polished it off. the hamon is rather non discript, and has some spots on the mune. convex grind.

price to make similar: $600

i would really appreciate your imput on ths one... thanks!

Very slick. Not much else to say. I really like the contrast of the two woods together. Bet it feels great to hold too.

Nice.

Chris, you're amazing. I just can't believe how far you've come in almost no time at all, and it makes me feel like I'm fumbling blindly. I'm jealous, and very impressed!

You continue to blow me away! $600 would be very well spent, indeed for that piece! If only I had some spare change laying around, you would be getting an email from me today! I absolutely love the matching wood handle/sheath and if I were to conceptualize a Japenese inspired tanto, it would look almost exactly as you have done it.

I can't say enough how much I love this piece! Someone will be really happy! Kudos. Kudos. Kudos.

That is wonderful and price is very, very reasonable. I don't usually like bocote, but the way you've done it with the ebony they just sing together!

thanks guys!
i cant take credit for the bicote.. that would be the guy who wanted it made. he picked out the wood, so kudos to him for that..
but thats guy! i have been helped so much on this forum, which is really the only reason i have improved at all. so thank you!

Congrats! It is a beautiful blade...........(Double the price!!)......(After you make me one:))

that is my grandmother's table.. and she would NOT be pleased if i included it *grins* it makes for a gorgious background though.

i am actually hoping to do some more.. simple stuff here.. but iwant to try a larger bowie or something big and non-jap with a hamon. a good wide blade to give me some "canvas" for a cool hamon, and i want to try a carved handle..

thanks for the feedback!

How thick is that? The point detail looks great.

Also, you may want to use a term like "non-Japanese" rather than "non-jap" which is often perceived as a racial slur.

GREAT WORK CHRIS! The hamon is most impressive, looks like you learned alot from Walter's video!

I agree with Chiro, alot of time jap can be considered quite derogatory unless you are talking to a WW2 veteran.

Depending on whose country he fought for, he could still be pretty offended.

hey guys!
*shagrined* i will be more careful in the future with the use of japanese. (the sad fact is i didnt want to have to spell the whole thing..

the thickness is abut 3/16 i would measure to be exact, but i fed-exed it off today.. and it is gone. *sniff*

but i am very very very ready to work on something else.. you know what i mean?

thanks butch! well.. you would have to wait if you did want one.. so that we you can get money for it *grins*
thanks again!

You have got to quit this!!! You started about the same time as me and you have just totally blown me out of the water. Not jealous, actually love seeing your work. It's inspiring.

This piece is just beautiful. Not overly fancy, just a great balance of usable and displayable.

Charlie

thanks guys!
you are very kind, but i dont think it is something you couldnt do charlie. you just have to see something you like and copy it. in this case it was a tanto. but thats all i do.. you learn as you do it.
thanks so much!
