i am looking for info on how to prep ebony in order to epoxy to the tang.

It should be pretty straight forward. I have used ebony once so far and I just sanded it to 80 grit and went from there. I think the most important part is to have enough "tooth" to your tang and wood to give the epoxy something to hold on to.

Hope that helped.

I agree with Laredo. I used ebony once and sanded with 80 grit plus roughed the tang also. Be sure both surfaces are clean.

you might want to try African Blackwood instead of ebony - it's also jet black usually, and doesn't split nearly as bad - they use it for clarinets. If you do use ebony, work it a little at a time, never let it get hot, and be sure the scales and tang are DEAD FLAT - if you have to squeeze the ebony to the tang with clamps, you WILL have a problem - ask me how I know!
