Economic downturn changing your knife buying?

What with the economic downturn(stocks coming down, power costs up, gasoline up) are you making any changes in your knife buying? If so, what are they?

Thanks for your replies.

With a son starting college out of state in the fall and half the company workforce in town being layed-off, I've pretty much stopped all buying except at garage sales and thrift stores. (Budget has gone down to about $3.00 per knife). Last year I earned about 3 years worth of salary. This year it's mandatory vacation days every quarter.

I say buy all the knives you can cause the economy may collapse soon and we'll fall into a dark age of revolution and lawlessness. You'll ned those knives when your ammo runs out.

On the brightside a knife buying frenzy might be the catalyst needed to save the economy from impending doom. If things work out, we can all look back (and look at our new knives)and smile knowing we saved the country.

Buying American made would help too.

Well the downturn coincided with my the realization that I wasn't finding the "fixed" blade profile that I was looking for. So, being somewhat mechanical, I went back to my old hobby of building my own. Now I am into my fifth knife, have found the profile that I like and now I make what I wish as exotic as I desire. I sell a few just to buy more equipment. So far the downturn hasn't affected me in this regard.

I wish I could say otherwise, but my knife buying is "on hold" right now. I am taking this opportunity to use/carry some of the knives that I have bought over the last couple years and for whatever reason never really used. The cost to operate our household has gotten very close to what our incomes are. I have been in this situation before and it is not neccessarily a bad thing for the hobby. Summer is here and it is the "peak" time that I use my knives anyway. We do alot of camping hiking and some boating all of which let me use and enjoy the knives I have (which is already too many). ...Ed.

Well I am glad to have a career that is always busy and the pay is always the same (pretty much). I don't do the stock thing so I haven't lost any money so my buying habits haven't changed. I also live in NJ so I just see this time as most of the country catching up to our prices

The biggest thing to hit me has to be the gas. Paying nearly $2.00 a gallon and driving 100 miles a day, has pushed my once a month knife puchase habbit to once every two months.

I am greatful that I can still buy knives, but after the last six months, the only new toys I have are my LCC, my BM 690, and my BM 640.

The are more important things out there, that i could be missing...luckily, knives are it for now!!!

I IS GRATEFUL!!!

I have not noticed a downturn in net sales. Actually, May promises to be better than last December...go figure???maybe everyone feels sorry for a pore appalachian boy..( I certainly hope so!) Thanks to all..md www.newgraham.com

Actually, I've increased my knife buying. Because of the downturn, the prices on many knives have turned the knife exchange into a buyer's market; probably because everyone seems to need a little extra cash. If you've got the dough, this is the time to buy. Prices will be increasing soon. Guar-AN-teed.

The downslide shouldn't affect me... I don't buy that many knives anyway...A bowie a year and maybe something under $200 at the show...if it really jumps out at me (OK they all jump out at me...it has to *really* jump

I really like the comment about the rest of the country catching up to us on the price front. The other day I paid (& almost fainted) $6.95 for 2 slices of pizza with sausage and pepperoni, in Manhattan

Buying a new car has put my knife buying on hold for the next four months or so. Should have my new A4 in July. Then need to drop about 2K on mods, then I can buy a new knife. Got ready for the dry spell by buyin two per month for the last eight months or so.

It is not the fall that kills you. It is the realization that "yes, you did something that stupid."

I would definitely be buying more knives if the economic climate were better. I work in networking hardware, and companies are just not spending on major infrastructure work right now.

For the time being, I'm fulfilling my previously made commitments (fortunately/unfortunately, I have some longer term, large projects all coming to fruition at one time!), and only buying otherwise if I REALLY feel like it.

I'm actually able to buy more knives than I could a year ago? Why? Simple, a year ago I was still in college. Now I have a job, and money coming in.
